There are so many excellent reasons to bring a dog into your life (and therefore your home), and it’s something that a lot of people definitely want to do. Yes, it means making some changes and potentially some sacrifices, and yes, it means changing the way you live your life in some respects (you’ll have to become more active for one thing because dogs need to be walked and played with), but the idea of having a constant canine companion who will be there for you no matter what and who can become a part of your family is certainly something that appeals to many people. Dogs are very popular pets.

So what are your options? What’s going to work best for you? Some might choose to buy a brand-new puppy whereas others are going to prefer to adopt, but whatever path you go down, you’ll need to have a good idea of the type of dog you want to bring home with you. When it comes to making that decision, the easier option is always going to be a smaller dog because they need less space and they’re easier to take for walks and so on, but the truth is that big dogs can be fantastic pets, and if you only look at small ones, you could be missing out on the perfect animal. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how to add a large dog to your home so you can at least consider the option and not immediately dismiss it. Read on to find out more.

Choose The Right Breed

Dog Breed Quiz: What Dog Should I Get?

Just saying you want to get a large, or at least larger (than average) dog into your home is one thing, but it’s not really enough to help you make the final decision. The fact is that you’ll need to narrow things down as much as possible so you can be completely sure you’re choosing well, and that means researching different large breeds rather than just lumping all big dogs into one category. They’re not all the same, and some take more care and attention than others, and they’re all going to need different things, so it’s well worth really digging down into the different types of large dogs you might come across.

Not only will you need to look into what each large dog is like in terms of their temperament, personality, how much they might shed, what their most common health problems are, how much they eat, and so on, but you’ll also need to think about your lifestyle. How much time do you have to dedicate to grooming or exercise, for example? Are you physically strong enough to safely take care of a big dog when you’re out in public?

By coming up with more information about both breeds and how you live, you’ll be able to work out a shortlist of large dog breeds that will suit you and your situation, and go from there.

Make A Safe Environment

The thing about large dogs is that they need a lot of room to move around in, and they’ll want to explore, so it’s not just about the amount of room they have – it’s about how safe it is as well. You’ll need to make sure your home is free from sharp objects, toxic plants, small items that a dog might be able to swallow (either intentionally or by accident – dogs won’t know the difference!), and so on.

Now it’s true that you’ll also need to make sure your home is a safe environment if you decide to go for a small dog, but remember that a small dog can’t reach the same level as a large dog can, and that means there’s more that can harm a large dog – they can get into more of your cabinets, or perhaps they can reach up to a table or kitchen counter where a small dog wouldn’t be able to. In that case, there’s more to think about when you’ve got a large dog coming into your home, and more safety measures to think about. Plus, you might need to invest in some sturdier furniture – a big dog could get hurt if your chairs and other items are only flimsy (and the furniture itself could break, so you’d have to replace it anyway – it might be better to do that through choice rather than necessity!).

The Exercise Question

All dogs need regular exercise if they’re going to be healthy and happy and live a long life – as far as possible, anyway. But smaller dogs won’t need hours and hours of exercise – they’ve only got little legs and they just don’t need to go out quite so much; their energy levels soon run out. Big dogs, on the other hand, need lots of exercise; they’re larger, so they have more energy, and that needs to be used up, plus there’s simply more of them so they need to exercise to prevent becoming overweight.

When you’ve got a big dog, you’ll need to ensure you can fit in daily walks (and we do mean walks, as in more than one) and plenty of play sessions to keep them entertained and burn off excess energy. Things like taking them hiking, swimming, or even trying out agility training can be ideal, but that’s going to take up a decent amount of your time, and you’ll need to make sure you can fit it into your schedule. If you work long hours or you’re not physically fit enough to go with your dog on their walks, you might need another plan – a smaller dog might work better, or you could employ someone to walk your dog for you, in which case, you’ll need to factor the cost into your budget.

One thing that can help if you’re busy and your dog needs some exercise is to install big dog doors sliding glass doors in your back door or patio doors, for example. In that way, your dog can enter and exit however and whenever they want to, ensuring they can get outside even if you’re not there to supervise. That makes toilet training a lot easier, but it also means they can play by themselves and get some exercise. You shouldn’t just let them out in the yard and be done with it when it comes to exercise, you will still need to do longer walks, but it’s a good compromise for busy people who want a larger dog.

Feeding And Nutrition

As you might have guessed, larger dogs have different needs when it comes to their food and nutrition than smaller dogs – they need more of it, for one thing, but they also have different needs when it comes to their nutrition; they’ll need to build up more energy, for example, so their bodies can be healthy.

That’s why you need to research your dog’s food thoroughly before you choose what type and brand to give them. You’ll want to get high-quality dog food that’s formulated specifically for large breeds to help them grow well and support their healthy development. However, you’ll also need to monitor your dog’s weight and make sure you adjust their feeding portions if you need to to prevent them from becoming overweight, as that can lead to various health issues. Plus, you’ll need to make sure your dog has access to fresh water at all times and avoid feeding them table scraps or human food as it could be harmful to their health – dogs can’t digest the same things we can.

Grooming And Hygiene

How To Have A Clean House With Large Dogs – 9 Sanity-Saving Tips

Regular grooming is essential for keeping your dog’s coat looking good and keeping up with their overall hygiene, and depending on the breed, you might even have to groom your dog every day to prevent their fur from matting and to reduce shedding (that’s not always easy, and no matter what size of dog you decide to have, you’ll need to be prepared for a lot of fur to be left all over your home and belongings).

Here is an important point to bear in mind; even if brushing your dog every day isn’t too much of an issue, there will be times when you have to bathe and shampoo them to keep their skin clean and reduce irritation. Will you be able to do that? If you intend to use your bathtub and the dog is a large one, can you lift them in and out without hurting your back? Can you do it without slipping, which could hurt you and the dog? If not, that could be a sign that a large dog isn’t the right choice for you, but if you intend to bathe your dog in the yard with a hosepipe, for example, that’s a (potentially) different story. These are the kinds of things that are so easy to ignore or not even realize are an issue, but they’re also the kinds of things that can help you and your dog live happily together, so you need to consider every element.

Whether you’re striving for better mental health or want to make long-lasting lifestyle changes, self-improvement is a fantastic place to start. However, a self-improvement journey is often intimidating, especially if you don’t fully believe in yourself to excel. Still, this approach can help you become the person you’ve always wanted to be. So, if you’re trying to lose weight, become more organized, or simply be the best self possible, consider these steps toward self-improvement.

Plan Your Days

Self-improvement begins with organization. If you’re not organized, you will never tick off everything you want to do, meaning you’ll remain stuck in your rut without ever making the changes you want to make. Outlining and planning your days can help you maximize productivity, avoid getting buried under all your jobs, and minimize stress. By simply being more organized, you can stay on top of everything and have the freedom to move things around if you need to.

Make Time For Exercise

Struggling With That New Years Weight Loss Resolution? Consider This

Planning your days can also help you carve out those sections or activities you felt you never had time for. One of these might be exercise, whether going to the gym or running around the neighborhood. It can be tricky to carve out exercise time, but by being more organized, you’ll be able to find a few hours here and there you could squeeze in a quick session. Since you’re working on self-improvement, you want to be able to find this time, so find a time that works for you and start building a positive habit.

Decompress Every Day

10 Self-Improvement Tips That Will Change Your Life

If you’re anything like everyone else, you probably spend too much time on your phone. There’s nothing wrong with this, but spending all night scrolling through social media is not the best use of your time. Instead, get rid of the screen for now and decompress every day. You can find journaling prompts for stress relief that can help you keep track of your days and even identify patterns in your life that trigger issues, such as stress, depression, anxiety, or mere bad moods.

Identify Bad Habits And Dependencies

Just like going to the gym and working on your mental well-being, you can also identify how dependencies and bad habits are impacting your life. Issues like drinking or smoking can maintain a solid grip on your routine or health, and you’ll never get better if you’re still under their spell. If you feel like your habits are spiraling, checking into alcohol rehab can help you make things right. Likewise, you can also look into smoking cessation programs to quit for good and start getting your health back on track.

Work On Professional Improvement

How to better yourself: 15 tips to improve yourself everyday

While personal improvement can be ideal for making you more appealing to [potential partners or simply making you like yourself again, it’s also worth considering professional improvement and development. Joining classes for starting programs can boost your confidence and make you more qualified at work, which may lead to promotions or at least increased responsibilities. If you can show you’re willing to put in the work, your boss will be more likely to trust you, allowing you to show what you’re capable of.

Focus On Yourself

Too many people worry about what others are doing. They scroll through their Instagram and lament how they aren’t doing cool things like the people they met once ten years ago or they are still obsessed with their ex who is living their life. This approach is not a healthy way to look at life. You’ll never improve on yourself if you worry about what others are doing. Remember, you don’t need to showcase your life and let everyone know what you’re doing. Instead, work on improving behind the scenes. The more you focus on yourself, the less time you’ll have to worry about anyone else.

Have More Fun

5 Tips to Care for Yourself Better

Self-improvement isn’t just about the grind. You should still try to have as much fun as you can because there’s no point otherwise. It’s worth taking the chance to explore new things and put yourself out there. If there’s anything you’ve always wanted to do, there’s no better time to do it than right now. You might surprise yourself and discover what you’re capable of, which could inspire you to pursue even more in your quest to become your best self.

One Step At A Time

7 Best Ways to Motivate Yourself

Self-improvement does not–and cannot–happen overnight. It is an often long process that will involve mistakes and starting from scratch. However, you’re embarking on this self-improvement journey to become your best self, so every challenge you face will be worth it and it will make the successes even sweeter.

There is a lot to think about when it comes to improving your life this year, and one of the most effective things you can do to help with this is to make sure you enjoy greater freedom. This is something that a lot of people long for, but they don’t always know the right steps to take to make this work for them. It is important to think about the key ideas and elements that are going to help you make this happen for you, and this is going to help you improve this in the future.

When you want greater freedom, there are a lot of ideas that play a part in helping you to achieve this, and make positive life changes in the process. There are plenty of factors that can help you be more successful in your life, and freedom is something that is going to help you focus on this as much as possible. Here are some of the best ideas that are going to allow you to enjoy a greater sense of freedom this year.

Set Realistic Goals

5 Resolutions You Can Actually Keep In The New Year

One of the most important elements you should be thinking about when it comes to improving your life and increasing your freedom is to set realistic goals. You want to be ambitious and have lofty ideas, but at the same time, you need to make sure you have goals that are reachable and attainable. This is why you need to set new year’s resolutions that you can actually stick to, as these are going to help inspire and motivate you to greater long-term success, and help you to enjoy more freedom moving forward as well.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Getting out of our comfort zone

Getting out of your comfort zone is one of the best things that you need to try to get right moving forward. There are so many elements that will help you improve this, and one of the best ways of being able to get out of your comfort zone is something you can achieve with a new car. Head to Edmunds, and make sure you choose a reliable and dependable vehicle that is going to help you enjoy more freedom, independence, and opportunity moving forward.

These days, it’s rare to find a person who would not agree that life and day to day living is becoming more and more challenging – what with the price hikes, inflation, lack of manpower, over-worked employees, mental-health crisis and depression at every level in demographic in society. Some of these things are hard to deal with but there has to be a solution to some of these. And the solution lies with us, at a personal level. There’s always something – no matter how big or small – that we can do to improve these challenges. It’s that time of the year again. A new start, a new beginning! Here are some of the ways we can alleviate some of the challenges plaguing our daily living.

1. Develop a habit of Prayer and Reflection

This one is first on my list, because I have experienced it personally and know it helps! Spending time in prayer (if you are a spiritual person) or even personal reflection and examination of your day, situation, actions or decisions goes a long way in creating a sense of purpose and objective which leads to improvement in the way we live personally and in society. Some may argue life is busy and there are only 24 hours in a day. Well guess what, there are 24 hours in a day!! Let that sink in – 24 hours, out of which all you have to do is find or make 15 mins of sincere prayer and/ or reflection. This could be the first thing you do in the morning before getting out of bed (set your alarm 15 minutes earlier!), during the day on your lunch break (everyone takes time out to have a meal), when you get home (do this while taking a shower), at the gym (while working out) or at the end of the day before retiring for the night. There are several apps available to facilitate prayer and meditation. Remember, prayer and reflection are great at a personal level and could also be beneficial if you do this as a couple, a family or even in a group with friends. Make time for prayer and reflection, trust me you will find the time!

2. Let ‘Declutter’ and ‘Organization’ be your new motto

Poshmark Selling Tips To Get Your Closet Noticed

They say a cluttered surrounding is a cause for a cluttered mind and distracted thoughts. Quite dangerous when you think about it in terms or family, career and life decisions. You owe to yourself to declutter, that is, remove unnecessary items from your living space that otherwise could lead to an untidy or overcrowded situation. Decluttering logically leads to better organization. ‘Where can I possibly declutter?’, you may ask yourself. Start small with what is easily and visually perceptible. This could be your living space – a closet or wardrobe, the kitchen or bathroom cabinets, a book shelf etc. Decluttering is the opposite of unnecessarily collecting and/ or hoarding. If you have things that have accumulated over the years at not being used, sell, donate or send them to the trash. There are several platforms such as Ebay, Poshmark, Mercari etc through which you could sell secondhand items you no longer use or need. At office you could organize and declutter your physical workspace. At the digital level, how about the old files, apps and software taking up space on your laptop or desktop. There are a million little ways you could declutter your life and living space. Given that some of us, while embarking on a cleanup exercise may get fully absorbed and even drowned in the task. We must be mindful of this but, nevertheless, try some of these solutions and who know, they may surprise you with the opportunities they open up!

3. Manage your Time wisely

Are These Time-Wasters Causing You To Work Overtime?

From the above point of getting so absorbed in tasks (whatever these may be) that we may find ourselves helpless, frustrated or drowning in them, a smart way to combat this is to always be mindful of time. Time is a tricky thing and even ironic. We all have the belief that we are in control of our time – at least our personal time. Yet, if we hired a construction team (on our personal time) to redo our home, or hired a lawyer to advise us on a particular case, we might find we’re being billed by the minute. Are we still the master of our personal time? Or while absorbed in our hobbies, the clock runs out and we find we’ve neglected another more important task while enjoying our personal time to engage in our hobbies. The truth and fact are that Time is its own Master and none of us can control time – increase or decrease it. We can, however, effectively manage our time. The way to do this to remind ourselves of the 24 hours in the day and prioritize our tasks accordingly. What cannot be finished must be left for another day and another time and we can learn how to improve efficiency along the way.

4. Develop your Talents, conquer your Weaknesses

5 Reasons to Love Your Age

Everyone has talents. The Bible and scripture teach us this. What do we do with our talents is the question of significance? Are we even aware of what our particular talent could be? The way to find out is to engage in as many activities and opportunities as possible while we have the time and means. We discover some talents early in life – perhaps as a student- and then use the rest of our lives to develop and improve these, some even choosing their talents to become their careers! But others discover talents later in life as a result of something they did. Perhaps as part of training and development in their careers (my father for example in his youth worked in a bank with all its regular operational roles, but was later given an opportunity to work for their tech and security and discovered his calling as a software engineer thereafter!) Some may find it pursuing a hobby. Talents are in us and opportunities to discover them are all around us. Make it your mission to utilize your talents to your full potential. Doing this would necessarily involve getting over fears. People are unique in that we are all wired differently, having different kinds of fears. The fact is that fears are unfounded. What scares me may not scare others… so can it really be a fear? Again, a lot of our fears stem from a failure in the past, or a feeling of inadequacy. But these too are only instances, separated by time, circumstances and maturity. For example, should an adult still be afraid of something that scared them as a child, even though they are now grown and may better understand the thing that sacred them? Fear only holds us back from developing our talents. Make a decision today to Explore your talents by conquering your fears!

5. Decide to form your Own Conscience

How to Form a Good Moral Conscience

Conscience, much like time, can be a tricky thing. We do not always understand our conscience and therefore not as much in control of it as we think we may be. Most of us would define conscience as that little voice in our head telling us what is good and what is bad. In fact, most people feel their conscience is truth. This is a big mistake that is often misguided and leads us into most of our problems. The truth is that unlike natural law that exists as truth in the universe, conscience is subjective, meaning that it is capable of error.

Conscience and more importantly moral conscience, therefore to avoid error, needs to be properly formed and then consciously developed to a stable degree to which one can honestly rely on their conscience to make sound, rational and ethical decisions. More often then not, bad decisions are made, because of an ill-informed or not fully developed conscience.

It is important to note that conscience is introduced and developed early in life. The earlier the conscience is nurtured and developed, the better the over-all quality of life later on. It is never too late, however to form and develop our conscience.

The Catholic Church teaches that some of the important ways to develop a conscience is the practice of virtues (good habits) and avoidance of vices (bad habits). Regular confession, acts of repentance and reparation, and acceptance of responsibility are some of the ways to develop a reliable conscience

6. Work on your Self-Awareness

Raising Success – 7 Chores You Kids Should Be Doing & Why

Thanks to the excessive exposure to and availability of technology, all of us – young and old- find ourselves more distracted today than our grandparents and past generations. Technology has a way of engaging us ALL the time. This a distraction that has a direct impact on our ability to focus on the external (things outside of us) as well as internal – our own self-awareness. A lack of self-awareness, like a lack of moral conscience, can not only lead to getting us into trouble and making bad choices, but also impacts the opinion others may have of us. When we look distracted because we are not aware of ourselves, it tells people around us that they are not important. Similarly, our behaviors both in the physical as well as digital online world – the way we walk, talk and present ourselves, the things we do and say – either because of our lack or awareness or possession of self-awareness can dictate our success in life. Self-awareness can destroy or create opportunities. If you were not aware of yourself and the impact you may be having on the world around you, now is a good time to start!

7. Build Real Relationships, not online ones

2020 Unconventional New Year’s Resolution for a New Decade

Gone are the days of real, true, in thick or thin friendships. It is becoming more and more common for young people and kids these days to spend more time online than in the real physical world. Thanks to Facebook’s Metaverse and other similar online offerings, the possibility of avoiding the real world and escaping into an anonymous one is becoming a dangerous reality. Yet scientific research, studies and good old common sense has shown that real relationship and verbal – physical communication with actual people in actual relationships feed one’s need for love, friendship and a sense of community. Those that engage in real relationship have a tendency to be more grateful, happier, mentally and emotionally stronger than those who lack these relationships and who tend to be more isolated and depressed. Remember: No man can live as an island and nothing can substitute real communion with other human beings or creation all around us. Human relationships build us up, no matter how brief they may be. A hello to your regular barista or can driver to work, a smile, handshake or hug you give or receive from a classmate, a friend, a colleague or a stranger goes a long way in feeding our souls.

8. Be Original and Creative

The Source of Creativity and Why It All Matters

In a world that has become so lazy that modern day movies, music, products and videogames are just a copy-cat and rip off of an older better version, originality and creativity is absolutely vital if we wish to progress.

Being creative and original is not just meant for students writing essays or scientific papers, or for the poet composing poetry or an artist trying to create art. Creativity and Originality is meant for all and in every sphere of life. It starts with originality of thought. This does not mean creating new realities or distorting facts to suit our narratives. Thinking creatively means finding solutions to problems, getting along together, building new visions. Going with the flow and absorbing the thoughts, actions and opinions of others without clearly thinking on our own or without any conviction of our own is being the opposite of original. Choose to be original in your thoughts this new year and put those original thoughts into your own creativity!

9. Waste Not – Want Not

6 Simple Ways To Reduce Waste For Your Business

An oldie but goldie. Translated, this means being conscious of resources – all resources- no matter to who it belongs. It could be energy sources – water, electricity, fuel and other utilities we pay for and utilize on a daily basis. It could also be our own time, our talents and intellect, or our spirituality. It could also be the things those around us own or possess – their time and resources, or simply their love, attention and goodwill. To be mindful of these means not to abuse them as nothing is infinite. Everything runs out – water, fuel and even patience. Be happy with less. Use the less well. Recycle and share surplus with others and be grateful for the extras.

So, there you have it 9 ethical resolutions for the new year and a new you! We hope these tips have been helpful. You do not have to adopt all of them this year, but even if you follow some of these good habits in the next few months, you’ll be on your way to a better you! Good luck and push forward and onward.

Anorexia is an eating disorder indicated by a distorted perception of weight resulting in abnormally low body weight and constant fear of gaining weight. People with anorexia are concerned about their weight so much that they use extreme efforts to control weight gain, which may negatively impact their lives.

People with anorexia limit weight gain by restricting their food intake, inducing vomiting after eating, or misusing laxatives and enemas. Others try to lose weight by exercising more than they should but never being satisfied despite how much weight they lose.

Many misconceptions about anorexia can delay seeking help, which can worsen the condition. You can understand more about eating disorders by learning these common myths about anorexia.

One must be dangerously thin to have anorexia

The Percentage Of ‘Underweight’ Store Mannequins Will Shock You

Many people assume that people with anorexia are skinny because it is associated with low weight. Although low muscle density, low body weight, and a gaunt appearance are associated with anorexia, that is not to say naturally thin people have anorexia.

The fact is that anorexia can affect even people with average body weight. The diagnostic criterion for the disorder is low body weight relative to the appropriate body weight of the person, depending on their age, gender, and physical health.

People suffering from anorexia don’t eat

Another assumption is that people with anorexia do not eat or eat very little food necessary for survival. While extreme food restriction and eating less than the body requires are some symptoms of anorexia, that doesn’t mean the person doesn’t eat.

The truth is, people with anorexia eat but practice unhealthy food avoidance and extreme calorie restriction. For example, they tend to avoid foods dense in fat or substitute foods with non-caloric beverages such as coffee. Such behaviors can lead to undernourishment and a lack of energy and the necessary nutrients to keep the body functioning optimally.

Anorexia only affects women

Adult Women Struggle With Eating Disorders, Too. Here’s Why Treatment Looks Different

Another myth we need to debunk is the assumption that anorexia doesn’t affect men. Although the condition is more common among women, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect men. The fact is that many men suffer from anorexia even unknowingly.

Anorexia in men tends to manifest as body dysphoria or obsession with having lean muscles rather than being extremely thin. Social pressures also affect men, and some are likely to be dissatisfied with their body weight and shape, leading to anorexia.

Anorexia is a cry for attention

People who don’t know about eating disorders often assume that anorexia is a cry for attention or a choice one makes. But the fact is that anorexia is a psychological disorder associated with low self-esteem, self-doubt, and extreme fear of gaining weight. It is an eating condition linked to maladaptive thought patterns and compulsions.

The thought patterns often come from within and require counseling and therapy to unwrap. In most cases, compulsive behaviors can be addictive, whereby the person cannot easily stop even if they tried. Therefore anorexia is not a choice but a psychiatric condition that requires professional help.

Anorexia is a stage one can outgrow

When Anorexics Grow Up

Anorexia tends to affect people in their teenage years, which explains why many believe it is associated with adolescence and societal pressure linked to body weight and shape. Although the chances of getting anorexia in adulthood are low, that doesn’t mean it is a passing stage one can outgrow.

The fact remains that anorexia is a mental health condition that one is unlikely to resolve without professional help. It is associated with maladaptive behaviors and problematic coping strategies. Consequently, it can go into remission without treatment and reappear after some time.

The final take

Eating disorders such as anorexia are psychological problems that require professional treatment. Luckily, treatment options including nutrition counseling, family-based therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy can be life-saving for people with the condition. The disorder can worsen without treatment, so it is best to seek help soon if you or your loved one suffers from anorexia.

Countless people around the world struggle with insecurity, but very few are willing to speak about it. Due to the silence surrounding this topic, it can be easy to get lost in a sea of self-doubt and low confidence. Even worse, it’s possible to think you’re the only one experiencing this!

The truth is that insecurity is a normal part of life, and there are plenty of ways you can free yourself from the hold it has over you. However, there’s no one way to tackle this problem: moving past insecurity involves a holistic approach to your entire life. If this sounds daunting, don’t worry: it’s not as hard as it seems.

Identify The Root of the Problem

When you’re experiencing insecurity, it can be really hard to have a clear picture of the world around you. These feelings can cloud your judgment, perception, and self-image. That’s why it’s vital to find a way to take a step back, and find an objective view over your situation. Something, somewhere in your life, is causing you distress. Your job now is to pinpoint it.

According to Psychology Today, there are three primary causes of insecurity.

Insecurity stemming from failure or rejection

Insecurity caused by social anxiety

Insecurity fueled by perfectionism

Take stock of your life in an objective way, and ask yourself whether any of these three causes resonate with you. The fact is that there are tried-and-true methods for handling each one, so take comfort in the fact that insecurity isn’t a life sentence! There are ways to move past it by targeting the roots.

While this approach is the most direct, there are other factors in your life that can make the problem far worse. Addressing them is central to a holistic approach towards tackling your insecurity. Let’s take a look at where you can begin.

Take a Look At Your Routine

Exercise, sleeping enough, eating healthy and drinking in moderation are all things that contribute towards reducing your insecurity. While it may not seem like your self-critical feelings are related to how much you slept last night, the truth is that the condition of our body dictates a lot of our emotional state.

Simple habits for better mental health like these go a long way towards tackling anxiety. This involves a broad effort across many different elements of your life, but the fact is that this is key to tackling anxiety: a multi-front approach. You won’t get anywhere by changing only one thing. You have to take an active approach towards improving the quality of every part of your life.

Unfortunately, if you’re not careful, bad habits accumulate and solidify. Once they do, it’s much harder to undo them. For example, exercising to prevent weight gain is far easier than exercising to achieve weight loss. Be proactive, get healthy, and kick those bad habits to the curb. You’ll find that your confidence and self-image will have improved considerably!

Pinpoint Negative People in Your Life

We all know people who are seriously and unendingly negative. Often, they can’t help it! It’s as if complaining, criticizing, and groaning is built into their DNA. Their ability to turn any mundane event into a reason for fear and regret is almost impressive. There’s no two ways around it: avoid these people.

Insecurity includes, in part, a defeatist outlook on the world. When you’re surrounded by people who constantly preach that life is terrible, and that nothing is worth doing, it can go to your head and make your struggle with insecurity a lot more severe. This is doubly true for those who can’t help but criticize you constantly – the serious effect of this behavior on your mental health is not something you should take lightly.

However, what if you can’t walk away? Often those who drag you down the most are your very own family members, or a particularly cruel boss at your workplace. In these cases, you may simply have to confront them. For example, according to Lensa if your boss makes you feel incompetent, it’s important to stand up to him or her in a professional manner, even if it jeapordizes your employment!

This is because putting your foot down about your boundaries and your mental health is vital. If standing up for yourself in a professional way means you may lose your job, then you’re probably better off finding a different place to work. When it comes to those who drag you down intentionally or unintentionally, they can’t be higher on your list of priorities than your own mental health.

Take Care of Your Body

6 Things You Can Do to Improve Your Health

While the real work that goes into tackling insecurity happens through changes to your mindset, habits, and environment, it’s important to find a way to embrace your physical beauty as well! Putting effort into the way you present yourself to the world is a great way to improve your self-esteem.

Check out our article on 5 tips for a more confident you. Using some of these tricks, you can remind yourself that you are, in fact, beautiful! Simply feeling your beauty can help wash away insecurity, and strengthen the core self-image that gives you confidence.

Find Perspective

At the end of the day, remind yourself that insecurity is a normal part of life. Everybody experiences it, and often it’s simply a sign that there’s something in our inner selves or the world around us that we’d like to change. Instead of feeling resentful towards this negative emotion, think of it as a warning system that’s on your side.

Insecurity is simply your brain trying to tell you that something doesn’t feel right. As soon as you feel it, look around at your life, and determine the problem. Once you do, it’s far easier to take steps towards fixing it. Insecurity isn’t something you need to fight, instead it’s a sign that there’s a battle to be fought elsewhere.

Let’s face it, almost everyone could use a little better mental health. Whether you’re just extra stressed from too many projects at work, or feeling overwhelmed by the dishes in the kitchen, these daily habits are great for helping people get a boost and feel better overall. While major mental health issues require additional intervention, these are tips that can help the average person each day.

Sleep

What Messes With Sleep Patterns

Have you ever been so exhausted you thought you would lose your mind? Sleep deprivation is real and it impacts every area of your mental health. Being a little tired is different from being overwhelmed by lack of sleep. For many people, sleep is an area that they can control. It’s important to take the necessary steps to get enough sleep every night. A good sleep schedule goes a long way. Start by turning off technology devices an hour before bed. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening. Make your room cooler and darker. Think about a cave. If needed, sleep with an eye mask to block out more of the light. Teens have the hardest time overcoming sleep deprivation with all of the distractions in the modern world, if you or someone you know is struggling with this problem consider seeing a teen mental health therapist.

Make Lists

The Ultimate Summer Bucket List for Adults

If your mind is always on overdrive trying to remember all the things that need to get done at home or at work, start by making lists. Lists help relieve the stress and pressure of trying to remember everything. A good notes app can come with you anywhere so no matter what you need to think about later, you won’t forget. Putting it down means that your mind will be freed to think about other things and you won’t need to fret about it anymore.

Make Time For a Hobby

5 Hobbies That Make You Smarter

I know this sounds crazy, but if men can take time to go golfing on the weekends, us ladies can have a hobby too. Whether you enjoy crafting, hiking, drinking craft beer, or finding interesting things to photograph, a hobby will give you something fun to do. We are wired for fun. Our brain needs the dopamine it gets from you doing something enjoyable.

Get Physically Active

3 Exercise Bike Workout Tips for Beginners

Want to relieve stress and improve your mental health? It’s important to get outside and get physically active. You can do this by walking every day on your breaks at work, going outside with friends after work, or going to the gym. No one exercise is better than another. It’s just important to get moving daily. The happy hormones help your brain and your mental health, so put on your Skort with Pockets and trainers and get moving!

Eat Nutritious Foods

Healthy Snacks to Keep You Going When It’s Busy

I’m going to say it. If you want better mental health, you need to eat better. It’s because healthy foods nourish your body and your brain and have a direct impact on how you feel every day. Eat from all the food groups, eat colorful fruits and vegetables, and reduce your sugar and processed food intake and you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel. Not only can a poor diet impact your mental health, it affects your physical health as well. Poor diet is also linked to hair loss and other hormonal issues.

Let It Go

So, she had a snarky tone with you. What if it wasn’t about you? It’s important not to take everything so personally. If you have a problem with people, learn to work it out and then let it go. Holding on to issues only weighs you down. Clinics like Serenity Mental Health Centers understand this. They offer a range of treatments, from medication management to therapies like TMS and ketamine, to help individuals manage their mental health and find balance. By letting go, you create space for healing and growth.

Foster Positive Relationships

Sometimes it’s important to let go of relationships with people who bring you down. Find relationships and people who build you up and don’t tear you down. Positive relationships have a great effect on how you feel and how you perceive the world.

Practice Gratitude

Why an Attitude of Gratitude Is Essential (And How to Develop It)

If you only ever think about the things that are bad, you’ll only ever notice the bad. But by practicing gratitude either by writing it down or saying it out loud daily, you shift your mindset and your perspective. You start to see the world through a different lens and your mind is better able to handle the challenges that come its way. Gratitude has a powerful effect on mental health and practicing it daily can make a big difference. It changes your mind in good ways.

I have 2 sons and like most parents, my husband & I have (eventual, long-term) expectations of them, but to make those ‘expectations’ a reality, I need to prepare my kids for life. I realize that as a mom, it’s difficult most time to let go of the reigns & trust our kids with chores or responsibilities. Routine is easier and a “never mind, it’s quicker if I just do it myself” attitude is my default mode. Sure, at the end of the day this means fewer hiccups, less yelling & a cleaner home…. But at what cost? As our children grow up, not giving them responsibilities is an opportunity stolen – an opportunity for them to learn, to really grow up, to be successful adults & contribute individually and collectively to society.

So, keeping this in mind, here are a few critical chores, I believe, are connected to success and if taught to a child early enough, will develop positive & effective habits later on in their adult life. If you can get your kids to do these willingly & correctly on their own by age 12 (if not before), count yourself lucky

Making the Bed: Setting Goals

Here’s what making your bed (or not) reveals about your personality

This is the first opportunity for success every morning. It’s the first task that is presented to the child when he/she wakes up & often signals their response or how they will react towards other activities throughout the day.

I remember teaching & explaining the importance of making the bed to my sons (now age 10 and 12) a few years ago. They share a room and have bunk beds. The older one is on the top bunk. Initially the younger one would forget but eventually has got into the rhythm of making his bed. Every time I asked ‘boys, are your beds made?’ the answer was always ‘yes!’ I thought my job was done. The older one started off strong but I recently discovered he’s been shoving his blanket out of sight, behind a huge body pillow. Since he’s on the top bunk, it’s hard to notice the bed isn’t made the way he was taught and supposed to do it. When questioned, he had no excuse for not making his bed. What possible good did he achieve by not doing the right thing? Was there anything more urgent he needed done instead & why did he not come back later to finish his bed? Was he also giving his teachers the slip with homework or assignments, was he slipping up elsewhere by taking what he thinks is the easy way out? Was this laziness or slyness? These were questions I had to ask him because I had to make him see that they were not good qualities to have in the world of adults or when he worked his first paid job.

What I realized is that unlike my younger son, the older one for some reason, finds it hard to set goals and rules for himself. He finds it difficult to follow goals others may have laid down too (like making the bed). So, he’ll need more time or guidance. But in the process, I’m hoping that making the bed will teach him to set goals in life because that’s important.

Taking out the Trash – Solving Problems, Starting Anew

What Japan can teach us about cleanliness

My husband & I were watching a few minutes of Jerry Seinfeld’s standup comedy last night where he talked about an object’s journey to becoming junk, how everything in a house is pre-trash stage, eventually on its way to becoming junk. eBay is a newer concept of people transferring trash from one person to another. And while the jokes made us laugh, it’s also kind of true. Getting rid of trash is necessary & needs to be done routinely. Physical trash if unattended to, causes disease. For me, a messy room is also a messy mind. I cannot concentrate with mess around me. Mess inhibits creativity & so, the process of cleaning up the house, taking out the trash is rejuvenating & cathartic.

For kids, taking out the trash can serve as a lesson i.e. It’s ok to make mistakes & it’s ok when things don’t work out the way you expect, but it’s important to understand that mistakes, like cleaning up trash, can be fixed and that every time you fix something, the possibility of starting a new will always be available! There’s no need to feel bogged down with childish worries and let the trash pile up. Taking out the trash is always the solution

5 Ways to Help Your Pets Stay Healthy and Strong in 2019

My sons have had hermit crabs as pets for 3 years now. The first pair died & we replaced them. The replaced crabs are still with us and the credit of keeping them alive (this time) goes to my older son. He has a connection with animals. He even feeds & pets the neighborhood cat who’s started to visit us regularly.

Looking after a pet, gives the child a sense of purpose. It has developed nurturing qualities in my son. He loves his pet and knows he plays a big role in keeping them clean, happy & fed. Having a pet, I believe, teaches a child to look beyond themselves and towards other’s needs. The world could use a bit more of that

Doing their Laundry: Planning & Hard work

Cleaning Skills to Teach Your Children

‘Laundry’. My husband shudders at that word and so do I sometimes. Not only is it chaotic, rule-bound, painstaking and time-consuming, but the thought of the number of sweaters that shrunk & ‘whites’ that became off white at their best and discolored at their worst, makes me want to cry.

Now, imagine your kids doing their own laundry.

Why should you create this nightmare for them? Why, when the load is heavy and it involves rules & using chemicals and an electronic washing machine that could get damaged? The answer – to root out laziness and teach your kid about hard work, planning & responsibility.

My kids used to have a gala time switching out clothes throughout the week, like it was a fashion show, with no regard about who took care of doing the laundry, folding their clothes or making sure they had a neatly organized closet. So, at first, I made them only fold their clothes & put them away. And boy did they grumble about that but it taught them, at least, to be more responsible about rotating their clothes & keeping their closet clean. Then I began to notice my younger one getting both mentally & physically lazy, refusing to think logically, and putting up a resistance to do any kind of work (except make his bed). So, I decided to make him responsible for all laundry in his room, including his brother’s. This would involve being aware when to do the laundry, washing, drying, setting timers on the machine, deciding how much detergent & water to load, separating clothes, making sure the machine and laundry room was clean & everything in place when he was done, bringing the laundry up to his room & then folding all the clothes and putting them away. The task truly is exhausting. On a weekday, he’d need to balance his schoolwork and sports and find the time to do all of this.

Skip to 6 months later! My little guy is a pro at laundry, he maintains good grades at school & has a great willingness towards work. No complaints whatsoever. He thinks critically and even plans his day and tasks ahead on his own with little guidance from us. I’m so proud of him, eager to see what he’s capable of. And we owe it all to ‘doing the laundry’. Since he doesn’t seem to be lazy anymore & that issue is resolved, I felt there wasn’t a need for him to continue doing the Laundry .I’m now making his older brother do it and let’s just say, I’m looking forward to the end of another 6 months to see if this experiment takes similar roots!

Putting together a simple meal: Gratitude & Survival

2 Questions You Should Ask Your Kids at Dinner

I can write a book on how ungrateful kids are about homecooked meals. From eating excruciatingly slowly, to wasting their food, to not saying ‘thank you’ when served their meals to comments like ‘I can eat a whole lot at olive garden’ and ‘ why can’t we have more of that ravioli (store bought, frozen or out of a can) like we do at grandmas?”…. these are all signs of the sense of entitlement a child has towards food. It’s common, we may have done it when we were kids and we’ve all heard about the starving children in Africa & Asia and why we shouldn’t waste food. But let’s face it, when we grew up, we very quickly and painfully discovered that life isn’t a buffet and neither are our meals.

Sure, fast-food tastes great but so does every other unhealthy food and Olive Garden is heaven on a plate but isn’t sustainable every day, even on a 6-figure salary!

More importantly, it’s not just irritating for the parents but every time a child acts difficult with meals, he/she is unnecessarily obsessing about the food, making himself/herself a slave to it and preventing himself/ herself from moving on to other more creative thoughts and activities. At no rate would I ever encourage a child’s ranting about meals.

So, it boils down to being grateful for what you have and if you’re not happy with it at least learn to fix it on your own, like a little adult. And here’s where my suggestion of a child learning to put together a simple meal comes in. Example – boiling/ frying eggs, cooking rice, brewing tea/ coffee, cutting veggies, tossing a salad, learning how to operate an oven so you can grill/ bake fish & veggies on a try. I taught my kids to do it all last summer with the intention that one day in the week, they prepare a homecooked, healthy dinner for the family & their father & I will eat it without grumbling. That is yet to happen but on a daily basis, they do put together their own lunches to take to school – PB or ham sandwiches, cut fruit, crackers & other snacks.

There’s always a post its reminder on the cabinet door in case they may forget how to do lunch, but I relieved to confidently know if ever my husband or I leave the kids on their own, they will not starve or wait to get the next meal served to them. Often, they ask if they can help with dinner & I take that as a sign that they are beginning to understand & appreciate the love & work that goes into preparing a meal.

Choosing their outfits: Awareness

4 Reasons Why Your Kids Should Pick Out Their Own Clothes

How you dress may say something about who you are, but how you carry yourself speaks volumes! That’s something I learnt as a little girl studying in a convent. We had a uniform but there were other standards governing how we did our hair, wore our socks, polished our shoes and managed our fingernails. Times have changed, true, but that discipline has stayed with me till this day. It’s something I’ve tried to instill in my boys.

By encouraging them to choose their own outfits for school, I’m teaching them that they are responsible for how they want to represent themselves to others. Not only are they enjoying discovering their own styles, they also know that different occasions call for different attire. Casual sporty school clothes & sneakers are not appropriate for a more reverent occasion like attending Sunday Mass. The clothes they wear also serve as a physical cue or awareness as to where they are and how to behave.

This will prepare them for how to get on in the real work environment.

Doing the Dishes: Service & Discipline

Dear Kids: Do Your Own Damn Dishes

Like taking out trash, washing the dishes and cleaning up after meals is a necessary activity. There’s no escaping it in the adult world, so kids might as well get a head start. This chore is especially helpful to solve the problem of children who are slow eaters – the last one who finishes eating gets to clean up. And while they are ‘cleaning up’ perhaps they could do a little introspection to see how they can improve themselves to avoid a repeated episode of dish-washing. The truth is, like I said at the start, it’s not something that can be avoided as an adult.

An easy childhood, without chores, accountability or responsibility may be fun in the short term, but could lead to a more difficult & challenging life as an adult. My point to this litany of chores and why kids should do them is this: Learning how to cope!

Life is a juggling act. It’s all about coping & multitasking. The more self-reliant you are, the less you have to depend on people and situations. You can better control the outcome and you have a better grip on life. That’s when you stop coping and start living successfully and what parent doesn’t want that for their kid.. So, while other members of the family may dote on your child, it’s your primary job as a parent to teach your child to cope, to become self-reliant as quick as possible!

January isn’t over yet so as far as resolutions go, there’s still time to formulate yours!

I’m not sure how many of you reading this, like me, have often thought about whether to even make resolutions at all. We make resolutions, sometimes grand ones – losing weight, going vegan, pursuing a different hobby or learning a new skill, getting a passport, travelling the world (you get the drift) – only to break them or worse still not even give them a go before giving up all together. And that’s ok.

This year, I told myself, I’d take my time formulating resolutions. Instead of a time bound, tangible resolution (like the ones mentioned above), I’d concentrate on improving my mindset, daily – as means to an end – which will assist me in achieving those time bound, tangible, resolutions. Here are some of my practical New Year 2020 Daily Resolutions:

Patience & Perseverance

The Unconventional Ways You Can Relax The Mind And The Body

In this generation of instant gratification, having patience is a rare commodity. As a mother, wife & professional I get impatient & frustrated easily & on a daily basis when things don’t go my way or when tasks are not completed in the time, I consider appropriate. My anxiety doesn’t help either. So, I’ve decided to be more patient with myself for starters. I’ve decided to do my best, be less judgmental of people & situations and persevere.

Obedience, Without Question or Grumbling

5 Resolutions You Can Actually Keep In The New Year

Someone asks you to do something that you know sounds like a good idea. But you don’t think too hard about it, you don’t obsess over what could potentially go wrong or how you’d look doing it. You just say ‘Yes’ (with a smile). Oh! How liberating to not worry for once & just go with the flow. For me, it’s so far helped saved time, precious time I am no using to focus on creativity & execution.

Generosity of Time, Words & Actions

A Healthy Office Environment

Easy to understand, difficult to execute. Being generous with my deeds & an attitude of service to others has always come naturally to me. It’s the generosity of my words & time that I have a tough time with. I’m naturally feisty & sarcastic. And as for time, it’s the one thing none of us have control over, so I am very stingy with mine. But though we can never control – shorten or lengthen – real time, we can also choose how & who to spend time with it and therein lies the generosity. I’ve been more generous with my time lately & it’s brough blessings on my family, friends & me!

Avoiding Acedia

Mood, Anxiety, and Design

Acedia, often linked to sloth and the 7 Deadly Sins is “a state of (mental) restlessness and inability either to work or to pray”. Whereas Sloth is physical laziness, Acedia is more of a metal indifference, intrusive thinking & purposefully distracting yourself with other thoughts or actions, to avoid dealing with a priority. Controlling the mind is harder than controller the body. I’ve been guilty of this several times, knowingly or unknowingly, throughout the day. But now that I know what Acedia is, I’m more aware & guarded in my thoughts. It’s given me more clarity to prioritize my tasks throughout the day & directly helped me complete the right kind of work in the right time.

Withdraw from Social Media

Self-Motivation: How To Ensure Productivity While You Work From Home

I cringe at this one as I’m sure most of us do. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube & the rest have taken over our lives! Wrong. We’ve let them. Locking up phones, temporarily deactivating Social media accounts & taking technology detox breaks are good ways to break the habit. Recently however, someone suggested another solution & probably the best one I’ve heard so far. Every time I think of reaching for my phone, I look at the person next to me instead & engage with that person, instead of a lifeless phone!

An Attitude of Gratitude

The Neuroscience of Gratitude and How It Affects Anxiety & Grief

Toughie! Many scientific studies have show than being more grateful has a physical impact on a person’s brain and is directly linked to increased calm and a sense of happiness. That said most of us are ungrateful throughout the day, when we complain about our jobs, problems with co-workers, the never-ending chores at home, even simple things like not enjoying our meals, or the way we spend our relaxation time. Complaining & being dissatisfied are symptoms of an ungrateful attitude. But everyday is a new day and an opportunity for me to be more grateful!

Open-Mindedness

How Great Leaders Align Their Company With Their Vision

Simply put, this involves being receptive to a wide variety of ideas, arguments, and information. For me being open minded means, giving up the impulse to react immediately and instead listen & assess a person or situation. It was hard at first, because my natural habit to interject kicked in. But I realized open-mindedness is a necessary ability in order to think critically and rationally. It’s a habit that needs to be cultivated and we’re never too old to develop good habits

Daily examination of Conscience

4 Ways To Practice Self-Care Today

This practice is common as a spiritual exercise among Christians and Catholics and involves a ‘review of one’s past thoughts, words, actions, and omissions for the purpose of ascertaining their conformity with, or deviation from, the moral law’. I don’t see why this practice cannot be applied to our secular, everyday lives. It would be similar to a year end job review – what are the things we did well, how can we improve on our weaknesses and what would the outcome look like? I believe a daily examination of conscience will eventually make me a better version of myself. This doesn’t only have to be for adults, so I’ve also begun to help my kids adopt this positive practice.

If you enjoyed reading this or agree that some of these are areas of concern for you that could use a bit of improvement, feel free to adopt some or all of my New Year 2020 Daily Resolutions for yourself. Remember to be kind to yourself. I for one, am rooting for you. Good Luck!

You just graduated high school, congrats! It’s an exciting milestone in life and one that deserves some celebration. Let’s be honest, high school was rough sometimes. This summer you now have to prepare for your freshman year of college. Maybe you feel nervous, excited, or overwhelmed. Whatever you are feeling, there are a few things you should sit down and think about before school starts this fall.

Securing Housing

Moving out of the house and into your own place is exciting and a little nerve-wracking. The new freedom is exciting but living on your own can also be intimidating. There’s a lot of things to consider when looking into where to live: location, price, private or shared room, amenities, and even the social atmosphere.

As a freshman, it’s a good idea to consider student housing. There’s always the option of just renting a traditional apartment, but student housing is convenient and sensible while in college. When renting an apartment, the lease won’t necessarily begin at the beginning of the school year. Student housing is more likely to become available at the right time. If you want a more social college experience, student housing will be full of students your age. Apartments could be filled with people that are a range of different ages.

Choosing Roommates

College is the perfect time to break out and form new relationships, but that doesn’t mean you have to drop all of your old childhood friends. It can be nice to room with old friends – just be careful to establish some expectations on how you live. Try to find roommates who have similar lifestyles as you. Do you both want to throw parties all the time? Are you both morning people? How clean do you like to keep your apartment? These are important conversations to have with your friends before deciding if you can room together.

Picking Classes

Choosing College Classes: Important Tips For Incoming Freshmen

Freshman year most of your classes will be generals. Use your university catalog to find what classes you need to take. Unlike in high school, there will be hundreds of classes to choose from. Choose a class load that will be challenging and fun. You are going to college to learn, so don’t just take all the fun recreational classes. But also remember that college is about experiencing new things so if you want to go ahead and try out that scuba diving class.

Selecting Professors

Choosing Your Professors and Keeping Those Ties

Professors can make or break your class experience. Talk with people who have taken your classes and ask which professors they had. Use websites like ratemyprofessors.com to see what people have to say about your professors. You won’t find the perfect professor for every class, but you probably can find a professor that is a fair grader and engaging to listen to.

Buying Textbooks

Textbooks are expensive. Probably more expensive than you expect. Honestly, there’s no need to go and buy a brand new textbook for each of your classes – especially while you are taking generals. Look for used and less expensive textbooks at your university’s bookstore. Compare your university bookstore’s prices with prices on Amazon or other websites that sell textbooks. Many universities even have Facebook pages dedicated to buying and selling textbooks. Look around before you buy that brand new textbook you only need for one semester.

Freshman year is an exciting time and you’re bound to make a lot of fun memories. Just remember to sort out some of the logistics, like housing and professors, before you get to campus this fall.
