Everyone acts like moving home is the greatest thing on earth. To be fair, it should be! You’re often moving somewhere new and exciting, opening a new chapter in your life. You deserve for this to be an enjoyable time yet there are aspects of moving house everyone kindly forgets to mention.

As you can guess, these aspects aren’t particularly fun to deal with. We’ll go through three big things no one tells you about moving home that you’ll benefit from knowing.

Your new house might not be clean

Moving Into Your First Mortgaged Home? Here Are Some Tips!

You like to think of yourself as a responsible homeowner. As you’re planning to move out of your old home, you give it a proper deep clean. You want to leave it as neat as possible for the next owners so they have a lovely fresh start.

Sadly, not everyone thinks like this!

Something nobody ever mentions is that your new house might not be clean when you move in. Previous owners aren’t technically obligated to clean their properties and many don’t. This means you move into a dirty place that feels icky. One recommendation is to book a move-in cleaning service to handle the cleaning for you before you move. Inform the previous owners so they don’t have to do anything. It costs money, but it’s better than hoping the old owners cleaned the place properly.

It takes a lot longer than you expect

You’d like to imagine that moving home takes maybe a week at the absolute most after you’ve bought a house. It takes time to pack your items and move them, but it shouldn’t take that long…right?

The average time it takes to move house is between 12 weeks and 6 months.

Yep, it genuinely takes that long – and this is the “average” so it might take even longer. Be prepared for a drawn-out process and do everything you can to speed things along. Ensure you’ve got all the right documents to hand over and be ready to respond to emails or calls so you can secure the keys and move according to your own timeline.

Moving companies cost a bomb

The Only 30 Moving Hacks You Need to Pack Like a Pro

Everyone tries to move home by themselves, but moving companies are almost always required for bigger items and to relieve your stress hormones. It’s virtually impossible to avoid hiring one – especially if you’re moving out of state or to a new city. People are happy to recommend moving companies, though they never mention how expensive they are.

It could cost between $800 to $2500 for local moves and upwards of $10,000 for long-distance ones. This is something to factor in when buying a home as you should try to get the moving costs out of the asking price. Bargain with the seller to get a neat reduction and it won’t make your move as costly. If you pay full price and then pay for moving companies, you’re adding an extra few thousand dollars to the total cost.

Be wary of these three things when moving house as they can bite you if you’re not careful. Get ready for a fairly lengthy moving process and do whatever you can to make it less stressful.

Maybe it’s time for you to get away from the stresses of everyday life for a little while. Some people don’t get the chance to go on holiday too much, but now might be the perfect time to do so. If you have been finding yourself particularly stressed out recently, then it might be a good idea to plan a family trip away, where you can make the most of your time with your loved ones. If you want some advice on how you can do this, keep reading.

Fun Activities

HOW TO PLAN THINGS TO DO ON VACATION

First up on the list we’re going to be taking a look at planning fun activities. If you look up the place where you are going, you will find a whole load of information on the fun things that they have to do there, or around that area. It’s important that you do your research and look into things that you think you and your kids would enjoy doing together, making magical memories while you are on your trip away.

It’s a good idea to try and plan at least one activity specifically aimed at each of your children, and then a few things that you will all enjoy. This way it’s nice and fair for everyone, which is what you should be thinking about at all times.

Somewhere Nice To Stay

It’s also important that you find somewhere nice to stay. If you have a budget that allows for an apartment, this is probably going to be better for your family than being crammed into a hotel room. You can look into Driftway riverfront luxury apartments or something similar as a special treat while you are on your holiday, giving yourself somewhere lovely to stay.

Of course, researching all of your options is still in your best interest because you want to find the best place at the best price. Take your time, but make sure that you have booked in advance so that you are secure in your knowledge you have a place to stay.

Set Your Budget

Make Your Family Vacation Cheap And Fun In A Way Most People Don’t Know

The last thing that we’re going to mention is that you should be setting your budget. You need to know how much you can actually spend on your trip while still being able to afford things like food, activities and gifts while you are away. You want to ensure that you are not worried about constantly running out of money throughout your trip, and that you can enjoy your time to the best of your ability. The only way this is going to happen is if you have thoroughly planned your budget, and can keep on track with it.

Hopefully, you have found this article helpful, and now have a better understanding of some of the things that you should plan out if you want to head out on a family trip. It’s important that you are planning as much as you can to ensure that you have a fabulous trip, so please take your time with this. If you rush, there is more chance of things going wrong.

There can be all kinds of reasons why you might choose to move to a new city that’s completely unfamiliar to you – you might need to relocate for work, for example, or perhaps you’re moving in with a new partner. Maybe you just want to go somewhere new and you need a fresh start. No matter what your reason might be, it’s always going to be more difficult to move to a new city than it is to move somewhere you already know, and that can lead to mistakes. The good news is that if you know what those mistakes are in advance, you can do your best to avoid them, so keep reading to find out more.

Not Checking Out The Neighborhood First

How to Vet a Neighborhood

When you’re moving, you’ll look for apartments that fit your budget, that are the right size, and that suits your aesthetic preferences, but if you forget to check out the neighborhood that those apartments are in, you might be making a mistake. After all, no matter what city or town you end up in, there are always going to be some areas that are nicer than others, and those are the ones you want to live in, not the ones that aren’t so desirable.

And it’s not even just a question of picking ‘nice’ areas over ‘not-so-nice’ ones – it might be that there are lots of nice areas with great apartments, but you can still pick the wrong one for you. That’s why you need to make sure the area you’re thinking of living in has all the amenities you’ll need, is located in a good place for you, and that the vibe is what you’re looking for. Check that out first and narrow down your search for somewhere to live, and you’ll be a lot more settled when you arrive.

Not Thinking About The Logistics

65 Moving Tips That Will Make Your Life So Much Easier

When you’re moving from one place to another one close by, the logistics of actually making that move are always going to be much simpler than if you’re moving from one place to another hundreds or even thousands of miles away. That’s why it’s wise to work out the move in plenty of time so you can be sure everything’s in place and ready to get you from A to B without too many issues (and ideally, with none at all).

Leaving the logistics of the move itself to the last minute might be possible if you’re moving down the road – after all, you can take your time and move things bit by bit, perhaps asking friends and family to help out. If you’re moving a further distance to somewhere brand-new, there won’t be as much time, and you won’t have family and friends around to help you, so it all needs to be organized in advance. For example, these long distance moves can require securing professional from a moving company montreal, or elsewhere. They can handle packing, loading, and transportation safely and efficiently, to ensure your belongings reach their destination reliably and on schedule.

Not Leaving Time To Explore

How to Feel at Home in a New City

When you move house, you need to take some time off to get the job done, and while it might seem as though you only need a day or two at the most, that can be a mistake because it gives you no time to explore your new surroundings. With minimal time off, you’ll move, unpack, and then have to head back to work or ‘normal life’, and you won’t get any time to take a good look around your new home – inside and out.

In the end, it’s better to take a couple of extra days off before you get back into the swing of things and use those days to explore where you’re now living – it could make a big difference to how welcome you feel.

One of the most worthwhile realizations any pet owner can have is that while their pet is simply part of their lives, you are everything from your pet’s perspective. You provide their home, where and what they eat, their access to healthcare and good sleep, their ability to have fun, to explore the world outside, to socialize, and to cap off each day knowing they’re in a safe and loving home. While they might not be able to conceptualize and vocalize this, their actions implicitly show that they know and love you.

For this reason, it’s important to make certain you adjust your life accordingly. The last thing any worthwhile pet owner wants is to inadvertently harm their cherished furry friend, but if you’ve never owned a pet before, there are a few little alterations to make. For example, no longer can you leave the house for days at a time without thinking about your pet and their wellbeing. Moreover, financial concerns are not only difficult for you, but could potentially threaten your ability to take care of your pet, and must be planned for.

It’s not all about doom warnings, however. Sometimes, we may just need to alter our conduct a little more or rearrange our house as needed. With that in mind, let’s consider ten little life adjustments to make after finding (and cherishing) your first pet: In the interest of relevance, we’re going to broadly discuss tips suitable for cats, dogs and puppies, or other pets with similar needs.

Daily Routine Tweaks

Our daily routine may be relatively fixed or it could be quite chaotic and change from day to day (although qualifying this as a “routine” may be a little much). However, one thing is certain, pets thrive from routine. If you want to encourage good behaviors and optimal health, your pet needs a good amount of time to sleep at night, and they need space to conduct their business throughout the day (potty-training as it were, not taking conference calls).

This means implementing a routine where they can rely on regular feeding times, relax with your family when you have free time, can explore the garden or go on walks for exercise, and feel like part of the family. If you spend too much time away from home it can be cruel to leave them alone for long periods, even if you have more than one pet for company. These little tweaks make a big difference, so plan them in advance and stick to your schedule.

Your Home Environment

Curating your home for a pet isn’t always the same thing as protecting it from a toddler. You won’t have to install catches on the cupboards and draws, because luckily, you’re unlikely to purchase a monkey or other pet with opposable thumbs.

That being said, you may want to add a doggy or cat flap in your doorway so they can enter and exit the garden at will, put up fencing to keep them in (this mostly applies to dogs), or add auto-closers to certain doors. This way, you can prevent small irritants or health hazards from being aided and abetted by your current home design. For some, purchasing an air purifier to help filter out hair and the smell of wet dogs can be enough.

Get On Good Terms With Your Neighbors

You Can Stop Your Neighbor’s Dog From Barking Incessantly

When you purchase a pet, you won’t need approval from your neighbors. However, it is important to make sure they’re understanding of what it’s like to have a pet, and a couple of the challenges you may face. For example, if you need to head on a business trip for two days, you might ask your neighbor to come and feed your cats and make sure they have access to their water bowl – perhaps giving them a nice bottle of wine or another treat as payment.

This way, you can also apologize if your dog was howling while you were grocery shopping, and work towards correcting that behavior. Maybe your cat “conducts their business” in their garden, and you’re working on preventing that behavior too. Being communicative, warm, welcoming, and fair is a good way to start that relationship because most people are fine, some aren’t but can be placated with techniques like this, and others are simply unreasonable, and knowing that ahead of time gives you fair warning.

Travel and Vacation Planning

Tips for Traveling With Your Dog For The First Time

It can be healthy to head on a small local trip with your dog to get into the habit of transporting them from place to place. Of course, this is more realistic with a dog than it is a cat, as they’re usually quite happy to follow you around all day and walk using a leash.

Using a small pet cage where needed, making a comfortable and safe space in the car, getting used to picking up their business after them, planning ahead for portable meals you can use, communicating with pet-friendly accommodations, these are all valuable skills for someone looking to travel with a furry friend.

Alternatively, getting in touch with local private kennels can be ideal, as they’ll often provide temporary space for pets to help families who might not be at home for a little while. This way, you can guarantee their care. Of course, sometimes family, friends or neighbors will be a good option, but don’t just assume, make certain they know how to care for a pet and are willing to put the appropriate time in. Over time, this will be a skill that comes as second nature to you.

Bonus: Training Is For You, Too

We tend to think of doggy training as a skill we pick up to better negotiate and lead our pets around as they need to be cared for. But the truth is that doggy training is just as important for us to set boundaries, give commands, and become respected in the eyes of your dog (yes, this is a thing), that further directions are understood and followed. If you can accept that dog training is for you, too, you’ll get more out of your starting sessions.

With this advice, we hope you can make all the little adjustments possible for pet ownership. We’re certain you’ll do an amazing job.

As hard as it is to believe, 2018 is nearly at a close with less than two months in the year and you’re probably starting to think of all the things you want to accomplish in 2019.

Whenever a new year comes around it can cause reflection on all the things you did in that year and all the things you want to make sure you do in the upcoming year.

How to Stay Safe During the Icy Season

New Year’s resolutions can be hard because most of the time it can seem like you put in all this effort to make them happen but next thing you know it’s June and more than half (or almost all) of those goals haven’t been accomplished.

But part of having smart goals, whether they are for the New Year or whenever, is to make sure that they are realistic and achievable.

Here are five ideas for resolutions that are both realistic and achievable and can have you feeling proud of actually keeping the promises you made to yourself and others.

Say yes more

3 Reasons You Should Say YES More Often

This is a resolution that can be easily achieved even starting the very first day of the New Year.

It can be easy to get in the habit of saying no or passing up opportunities because we are afraid or don’t want to mess with the status quo.

But life is about taking risks and trying new things so instead of saying no or thinking “maybe later,” when an opportunity presents it, say yes and try it.

Maybe it’s something you will never do again, but at least you know you tried it and you will be proud of yourself for doing it.

One veggie at a time

5 Veggies You Can Grow Indoors!

Instead of being too general with your resolution of “eating healthier” and setting yourself up to not follow through, try adding one new veggie to every meal that you eat.

When you start off simple and small you will find yourself adding more and more veggies and fruits, and before you know it you will be eating “healthy,” and it all started with one simple carrot.

Make your physical well-being a priority

New Year, New Beginnings: The Essential Guide To Making Your New Year Resolutions!

Most of us find that we can look back and realize it’s been quite some time since we’ve had a physical from our doctor, dental visit, or eye exam.

It’s not enough to want to just “be healthy” in the New Year, you have to make sure everything is actually going ok with your physical health by going to see people who can look for things you may not be seeing or noticing.

You can even schedule an appointment right now to have ready for you in the New Year! Just call your local dentist like Grove City Dental.

Preventative medicine is always the best medicine.

Get off the screens

Pros & Cons of Being a Digital Nomad

Screen time takes up a lot of people’s time nowadays, and sometimes we don’t really realize just how much.

In the New Year you can monitor that time just to see how much, and luckily there are some pretty easy ways to do it. Even most smartphones now have a way to keep track of it and see what your daily and weekly usage looks like.

Ask Yourself – Could You Survive Without Technology?

Once you find how much that time is, slowly cut it down by small increments of time.

Studies have shown that watching too much TV or spending multiple hours in front of a computer can actually shorten your life, so lessening your screen time can actually increase your life.

Go somewhere new

Company Expansions: How To Tech’ Your Business To The Next Level

This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to visit some exotic, foreign place, unless you have the means and the time to do so and in that case go ahead!

3 Ways To Cope With Success

But if you need to start out small do it by going to a new restaurant, or exploring a new part of town, or driving to a nearby city you’ve never been to.

There are still a couple good months of summer left and you should milk the warm sunshine for all that it is worth! Having a hard time coming up with some fun summer activities for you and your friends? We’ve got you covered with this ultimate summer bucket list.

See how many of these things you can do before the summer ends.

Go camping off the grid. Don’t go to a well-groomed campground. Pack up your gear and hike out into a forest to camp where no one else has been.

Spend an entire day at a water park. You always wanted to do this as a child. Now you’re an adult and can do whatever you want! So go for it!

Play slip’n’slide kickball. Get a few tarps, some kiddie pools, a beach ball, and a bunch of friends and you’re set! Just be careful not to knock out a tooth or you may be paying a visit to the dentist.

Stargazing Tips for Summer Skywatching

Sleep under the stars. Take a hammock out or just some blankets on a warm night and sleep under the stars. Find someplace quiet and dark where you can enjoy the serenity that a calm night offers.

Do a fun-run. There are tons of fun 5ks everywhere throughout the summer. Whether you want to do a color run or an obstacle course, get a couple friends and sign up for one before the summer is done.

Live like a tourist in your hometown. Visit all the touristy hotspots in your town. Maybe you’ll finally see the appeal in why all these people visit.

Go white water rafting. If you’re inexperienced, make sure you find a location where a guide can take you out on the water to be safe (trust me, it’s still just as fun).

Have a water balloon fight. Water balloons are not just for kids. Find an open field, put up some cardboard or wooden “bases” to hide behind and bring a couple hundred water balloons.

Spend the day at a lake. Go swimming or fishing in the lake. Have a campfire and roast hot dogs and marshmallows. Just enjoy a break from the busy world.

Go on that fair ride that you always chicken out on. You know the one I’m talking about – the one on the bungee cords that shoots you up into the air. You’ll regret it if you don’t.

Learn something new. Take a cooking or pottery class. Learn to ride a motorcycle. Get chickens for your backyard and learn how to take care of them using an automatic chicken feeder. I don’t care what it is, just learn to do something you’ve never done before.

9 Things I Wish I Had Known Before Riding Across the Country

Go on a biking trip. Back a light bag, get a couple friends to do the same, and just take off on your bikes and see where the road takes you.

Spend a day thrift shopping with a budget of $50. See if you can find any real treasures worth keeping.

Build a sand castle. Go to the beach, whether it’s at a lake or on the coast, and build the biggest sand castle you’ve ever seen. Make it a group effort or have a contest with your friends.

Spend a day reading in the sun. Make some iced tea or lemonade, lay out your beach towel or lounge chair, and relax in the sun while enjoying a book you’ve been meaning to get to.

Simply put, its therapeutic. Cooking is creative, it pushes my imagination and transports me to a place of self-discovery. And it all started with a determination to discover what was in…… my mother’s kitchen. Of course, my mum would absolutely not let my sister or me anywhere near the kitchen. The knives were too sharp, the stove too hot, breakable ceramic everywhere. And that never changed even in our 20s! Mum did let us prep the occasional salad, stir the curries, whisk the eggs for breakfast and mix in the instant coffee. But yeah, that was pretty much it. It was only when I left home in my mid 20s that I grabbed my opportunity and began experimenting with food. It is an ongoing experiment and adventure I haven’t shied away from …. Yet

They say a recipe has no soul. It’s the cook that infuses soul into the recipe and here’s my take on where the cook finds inspiration.

Hunger is a good cook

We’ve all been there and in fact, early humans cooked up their first hot meals more than 1.9m years ago! But it’s how you react when faced with this situation that can predict if you’ll make the cut as a good cook. See, cooking is all about perseverance and discipline. Are you going to be the type to go out and buy your meal? No doubt, it’s easier and quicker. It’s also probably more expensive and not that healthy. Or are you going to be the type to look at the raw material and supplies in your kitchen, take a stab at creating something out of nothing and putting up with the momentary inconvenience because you know it’s a small price to pay for the long-term benefits. I took the second option and I can’t remember a day after that that I ever went hungry. An important tip: build the discipline of stocking up your kitchen responsibly and by that, I mean, as if tomorrow was the apocalypse! If you get that right, you’ll go far kid!

You are what you eat

What Americans can learn from other food cultures

I come from a mixed culture and that means the food was all over the place. Flavors and cooking methods were not distinct but diverse in my home. A typical Indian curry could mimic Continental stew and ‘chutney’ could very quickly transform into jam or jelly. A dish cooked with meat was simply called meat curry – it could be spicy one day and bland the next. The protein could be substituted in the same cooking sauce/ gravy and fried onions and potatoes were the rescue to all dishes on the verge of failure. I took my mum’s cooking for granted then but I miss those distinct flavors now. I had no frame of reference when I started cooking and so I am not stubborn about food. For me, it’s all about fusion, experiments and adapting, which mirrors my personality. I am what I eat. Be open to different type of cuisines, food, flavors and ways of eating. The faster you adapt to foods, the quicker you assimilate into new cultures and societies.

Eating is a necessity. Cooking is an art

Looks as good as it tastes? Why an attractive plate makes for a tastier dinner

It’s all in the presentation. You heard this from MasterChef. You saw it in the contestants and felt it from the judges. Human beings eat with their eyes first and palate second which is why parents have such a tough time introducing their toddlers to new foods, the same toddlers who are ever ready to put any and everything in their mouth. The truth is some of the healthiest food is not always the prettiest. Think Kiwi, Oats, Chia seeds, clams or lentils. The trick is in the presentation. Use a burst of color, your best cookware, practice those plating up skills and come up with fancy names for your dishes. Once the food gets past the mouth, the palate will do the rest.

Don’t be afraid to take Whisks!

Global Cuisine Starts with Spice Blends

My mum didn’t have specific methods of cooking. I had no frame of reference because she didn’t teach me ‘how-to-cook’. She only told me it would come ‘naturally’ to me when it was time. She was right. Not only did it come naturally, but I saw a certain freedom and opportunity in not having any frame of reference. This ignorance enabled me to discover my own brand of cooking. I had no expectations and was therefore ready to take risks. I did not care about judgement because I always knew I had a very rare palate. My love of intense spice, sweet and sour at the same time resulted in me damaging my taste buds when I was barely 10 years old. Those taste buds healed with anti-biotics but if that isn’t an example of taking risks, I’m not sure what is.

Don’t be afraid of combining seemingly opposing flavors. I hosted a game night for my husband’s guy friends recently. They loved the ground beef lasagna and said it had the perfect flavor. The secret was in the sacrilegious blend of Marinara (Italian), Barbeque (American) and Sriracha (Thai) Sauces!

Use substitutes. If you like Mexican food but can’t make a tortilla, make an Indian ‘Roti’ instead. Go a step further and dare to serve Eastern savory with Western dessert. The key is to take risks, experiment with styles, flavor and presentation and you’ll be whipping up a storm in no time. You can find a variety of different recipes to help get you started by checking out food backwards. It will be fun and challenging to experiment with a bunch of different foods and recipes. All you need to get started is some ideas for what to cook.

Take the heat out of the kitchen

5 Reasons Eating Will Always Be the Best Part About Traveling

Travel and coffee is the cure to almost everything. There hasn’t been a successful chef on the planet who didn’t want to travel or explore new cultures and places. There’s only so much chicken and seasoning can teach you. But a conversation & coffee with old friends or new acquaintances widens your vision and gives your perspective outside the kitchen. Cooking is a means to an end, a social tool constructed to bring people together, foster ideas, discover opportunities and be inspired. So, go out there, explore every café and restaurant in town, take a trip to some extravagant island, lose yourself trekking up a mountain or on a hike. I can guarantee you, you’ll always learn something new you can use when it comes to cooking and your kitchen!

Give Me Inspiration & I’ll Give You a Reason to Cook

HOW THE WORLD’S BEST CHEFS FIND INSPIRATION

Long before Gordon Ramsay, Nigella Lawson or Jamie Oliver became famous, they had family and friends. These were their first fans. And like them, I was blessed with having people around me that were supportive of my food, at home, at the workplace and even on social networks. They have and always be an inspiration who have played a big part in helping me recognizing my potential. Every ‘like’ on a Facebook or Instagram upload of my food, every encouraging comment, every inquiry about a recipe, every exchange of cooking tips has gone a long way and deserves mention.

Hashtag Foodie: Young adults and the evolution of modern food culture

Food is just another commodity and like all products, if there is inspiration and demand, there will always be a steady supply.

If walking through a tunnel of terror, while chowing down your 3-course dinner to the cackling of a 2 hour live stage musical comedy show & dance in a cage of death till the wee hours of the morning is your idea of fun, then the 40-year old Witches in Britches theater restaurant might just be the thing for you. Located in the Wicked Castle, this horror themed restaurant – owing its resurgence to the public’s latest obsession with movies and serials like Teen Wolf, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries and vampires, witches, werewolves and the supernatural in general – offers a kitschy interactive show rooted in contemporary pop culture.

The Ninja Restaurant – Manhattan New York

Welcome to Feudal Japan where traditional Japanese food, sushi or steak teriyaki is served by waiters in Ninja Garb. If you are not a fan of surprises and sneak attacks, beware because anything can happen in this warrior-themed restaurant with its dark alley ways and maze of passages lit by lanterns. Friendly Ninja magicians may approach your dinner party with a few tricks, but if you aren’t so lucky the dangerous ones may creep up on you or pop up out of nowhere to catch you unawares. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The Black Pearl – Bangalore India

Space travelers and alien lovers, unite! Finally, we have a space themed restaurant worth mentioning. The Museum H. R. Giger Bar is one of several bars themed and modeled by the Swiss artist H. R. Giger. The interior of the bar – it’s roof, walls, fittings and chairs – is modeled along the lines of H. R. Giger’s biomechanical style as shown in the Alien films. Just the decor alone sells the experience!

Hajime Robot Restaurant – Bangkok, Thailand

This is the first ever Japanese restaurant, where all the serving waiters are ….robots (!!!). Diners order their food on a touchscreen display in order to activate the robots. Not only are these fascinating robots programmed to serve up more than 100 dishes and bus tables, they also entertain diners with a dance or two while they work. The owner of the restaurant, Lapassarad Thanaphant, said she spent 30 million baht ($927,600) on the restaurant including the purchase of four robots from Japan. Talk about hi-tech dining!

Drac Restaurant – Castell d’Emporda, Spain

Mars 2112 – New York, NY

Transport your little ones to the Red Planet at this intergalactic Times Square favorite. Now defunct, Mars 2112, an elaborate underground theme restaurant, was one of many tourist-targeted restaurants in the Times Square district of New York City. Based on future space travel and spanning 33,000 sq. ft., it was the largest such themed restaurant when it opened in November 1998. In its hay days, patrons were issued passports and escorted by restaurant staff, dressed as Spaceport personnel, to a full-sized flying saucer, where they were subjected to a bumpy 5-minute motion ride through a “Translunar Wormhole”, through a Martian Colony to the star bar and main dining area where giant video screen and smaller TV monitors display 1990s computer landscapes accompanied by robotic, noodling music. The bar’s “Mars-tinis” and “Cosmos-politans” were some of the best drink specials in Midtown.

Miracle of Science Bar and Grill – Cambridge, Massachusetts

This interesting eatery could not get any geekier after displaying its menu inside a chalkboard periodic table, forcing you to recall a bit of your science classes while deciding your order. It was one of the first restaurants to employ the open floor concept. According to it’s website, this bar & grill is “always packed with artists, musicians, geo physicists and computer gurus who know they don’t have to go anywhere else looking for a good time”. Miracle of Science truly stands out as the leader in geek-chic.

The Hobbit Pub – Southampton, England

Calling all J.R.R. Tolkien fans, we’ve found the one ring to bring you all and in the darkness, bind you and it goes by the name of The Hobbit Pub. The colorful cocktails and shooters served by the bar are fitting for the dwarves, elves, hobbits, and wizards that lend them their names. Fellowship quests, live music, real ales, hobbit cocktails, massive garden and atmosphere combined with the Middle Earth style in which the menus are presented make this a must-visit spot for geeks. Come see for yourself, you’ll love it!

Insert Coin(s) Barcade – Las Vegas

“It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this” (Legend of Zelda). Video Lounge, Game bar and Las Vegas Night Club rolled into one?! Nothing can get better. Armed with a unique combination of classic cabinet arcade games (like Mario Bros, Tetris, Street Fighter, and Atari Classic Pac Man), modern video-game systems like the Xbox and ps3 playable on high-def screens at the bar or in VIP booths, diverse musical programming and a geek-chic vibe, Insert Coin(s) opened in April 2011 at 512 Fremont Street. The nerdy atmosphere of the bar had a fittingly geeky menu to match, including specialty cocktails inspired by The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, and more. Insert Coin(s), a mecca for gamers, has closed after a four-year run “due to a rapidly changing DTLV business environment,” according to owner Christopher LaPorte.

Storm Crow Alehouse – Canada

the Storm Crow Alehouse, is best described as a fantasy tavern…. in real life. If you like simple British style food while catching up on geek culture, you’ll love this. You can roll a burger there just like a character, play board games all day, even join in a game with strangers.
