There’s a chill in the air, and it can be hard to muster the enthusiasm for cooking but, just as important as keeping the home warm is keeping the body warm. The right comfort foods can do a lot to improve your mood, so here, we’re going to look at a few foods you should be making more of to help you get through those chilly months.

Sink into a rich, warm pie

A vegetable pot pie is the flaky, bubbling winter dish you deserve

Although savory pies might not be the most popular thing here, there’s nothing like a crust full of saucy, warm meat that can really give you that sense of comfort when it’s dark outside. If you’re cooking for the whole family, or just a couple of people who will be glad to heat up the leftovers the next day, then a chicken pot pie is a great, inexpensive option, that stays warm for a long time thanks to all of that thick, delicious filling. Excellent for warming the body after a day out in the cold.

Nothing like chocolate to lift the mood

Cozy Winter Treats – Foods That Go With Hot Chocolate

Aside from being utterly delicious, chocolate is recommended for those in a low mood who are trying to show a little self-care. However, you’re really going to get your forkful’s worth out of it if you make it a little special, such as creating a big tray of brownies, whether to share with family and friends or to put in the fridge to heat up again later. The sumptuous, gooey, richness is bound to put a smile on any face. Even the smell from the oven alone might be enough to lift your spirits.

Add a little heat to your potatoes

80 Wintry Treats That Will Make You Feel Warm and Cozy

If you’re aiming to eat healthy during the holidays, then you might want to avoid getting too reliant on meats and desserts alone (as convincing as they can be). Potatoes aren’t exactly the lightest vegetable, but they are great for creating thick, hearty meals that can feel perfectly comforting when it’s dark out. However, you can turn up the heat a little bit more with a Mediterranean flair, using herbs like garlic, parsley, fresh rosemary, and even a little bit of pepper to make them all the more fragrant and welcoming.

Get familiar with your slow cooker

97 Slow-Cooker Recipes to Warm Your Winter

Rather than just a recipe, if there’s one appliance that can make your winter months a lot more delicious and help you make long-lasting comfort foods that you can pre-prepare for the week, then a slow cooker is going to do you a ton of good. You don’t need complex recipes, although there are tons out there, all you typically need is a stock, be it of your own making or storebought, meat, and vegetables, and then read up on how long to keep them in the pot.

Good food can help you feel a lot warmer and can do a lot to fight off the low moods that can so often come with the winter months. Hopefully, we’ve given you some inspiration of your own to cook some of your comfy favorites.

Starting a diet, or keeping one, through the holidays isn’t exactly ideal with all of the baked goodies and hearty meals that are expected at every social gathering. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. All it takes is a little planning and dedication and you can make it through any holiday.

However, do remember that it’s okay to treat yourself now and then, as long as it’s in moderation.

Don’t Splurge

5 Fun Indoor Activities for Kids to Survive Winter

There’s going to be a ton of super good food during your holiday gatherings, but that doesn’t mean that you have to eat it all. Just remember to be mindful while you are eating, eat slowly, and recognize when you start to get full. When are full, or close to it, stop eating. That’s the hardest part – resisting the urge to splurge on all of the good food. If it helps, just pack a plate of leftovers for later that you can enjoy when you’re hungry again.

Bring Food

Calling All Restaurateurs: Improve Restaurant Employee Productivity

This is where that planning comes in. Most people bring at least one dish to their holiday gatherings, so you can use that as an opportunity to bring something healthy (and delicious) that fits within your diet. You might find that others are really appreciative of the healthy choice too. If you can, bring a couple of items that you can keep going back to throughout the day.

Choose Healthier Options

The Main Reasons Why Startups Fail in the Food & Drink Industry

Besides brings your own food, it’s likely that there will already be some healthier options at the parties as well. Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes (not too much though), veggies trays, meats and cheeses, fruits, and salads are all healthier options that tend to make an appearance for large holiday meals. Eat more of the healthy options and moderate the less healthy options.

Have a Treat Day

Ideas for Successful Restaurant Marketing

Maybe for the big holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, you need to have a treat day. If there’s a day when your family or friends are having a get-together, make that you designated treat day to allow yourself some yummy holiday indulgences. Just be sure to reign it in and stick to your diet outside of the treat days that you’ve chosen.

Drink Water

7+ Health & Fitness Tips for Geeks

With all of the drink options available at big gatherings, it’s always best to stick to water – especially if you want to allow yourself more indulgences where food is concerned. Mixed alcoholic drinks, eggnogs, and sparkling beverages tend to have a lot of calories and sugar, so if you choose water instead, you can eat more of the food you enjoy within your diet’s restrictions. Also, drinking plenty of water will help fill you up before you eat too much too and it helps regulate your system as you deter from your standard diet.

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Health Tips For Those Who Work At A Computer All Day

On the day of a huge feast, make sure you still have a small breakfast or morning snack. If you go to a holiday gathering hungry, you’ll likely eat a lot quicker (and thus more) than your body should have in one sitting. This will help you be more mindful and be able to recognize when you are full, rather than going into full-on binge mode.

Enjoy Yourself

How To Feel Good In Today’s World

This is so important! Allow yourself to have a piece of pie or some warm buttery rolls. You should enjoy your time with family, and food can play a huge part of that! Don’t go overboard, but give yourself a little leeway during this time of year.

If you’re concerned about your health through the holidays, you can always ask your family doctor to help you come up with a game plan to make it through without giving up on your endeavors.

With Thanksgiving next week, we want to share a list of delightful treats put together by a Durango dentistry. If you’re trying to watch your sugar intake and keep your teeth sparkling this holiday season, you’ll want to give these treats a try.

We’ve taken some classic holiday desserts and found wonderful low-sugar or even sugar-free versions of the recipe that all of your guests are sure to love.

Low-Fat Apple Pie

Cut some calories, but reminisce in this classic, because it’s just as good as it’s sugar-filled counterpart. This low-fat apple pie uses all of the traditional ingredients of an apple pie, but eliminates added sugar. You can use Splenda to add some sweetness to your tangy apples, or just use naturally sweet apples, like Honeycrisps.

Find the full recipe at Spark Recipes.

Low-Sugar Apple Cranberry Sauce

You can’t have Thanksgiving without the cranberry sauce! But it’s always loaded with sugar because cranberries can get pretty tart. This wonderful substitute to traditional cranberry sauce uses apples to sweeten up the cranberries, and significantly less sugar than you would use if the apples weren’t there. What a great, and yummy, way to cut out some sugar!

Find the full recipe at The Foodie and The Fix.

Low Carb Pumpkin Cheesecake Mousse

Take a spin on a classic and give this pumpkin cheesecake mousse a whirl. It’s gluten-free, keto compliant, and it only takes 5 minutes to make! What about that doesn’t sound like the perfect Thanksgiving dessert? All you need is cream cheese, heavy cream, canned pumpkin, spices and vanilla.

Find the full recipe at Sugar-Free Mom.

Sugar-Free Candied Pecans

All you need for this yummy treat is some pecans, butter, and a sweetener of your choice. This recipe uses Swerve because it caramelizes nicely. This is another recipe that is quick to make, so you don’t have to spend hours slaving away for a perfectly delicious treat.

Now that Halloween is over, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It is the best time to start teaching your little ones about the reason we celebrate this fun holiday, and what better way to do that than with some fun holiday crafts? Our friends at a local preschool love to do fun activities with children, and so they have put together this list of fun thankful crafts for us to share with you.

1. Thankful Tree

Gratitude and giving thanks is what this holiday is all about. Try this fun little thankful tree from The DIY Mommy this Thanksgiving season. Let your littles explore outside for the perfect fallen branch to be the base for their tree. Find a cute bucket or vase to place it in, filled with marbles, moss or dirt. Help them cut out leaves on which they can write down the things they are thankful for. Hang the leaves on the tree and you’re done! You can even have your child think of one thing they are thankful for each day and add a leaf every day.

2. Paint Chip Turkey

This is a fun one. Pick up some paint chips from the store, or let your kids pick out some color. Then use those for the turkey’s tail feathers. Have your kids write or draw what they are thankful for on the paint chips. You can pull these out at the Thanksgiving dinner table to have each child read off what they are thankful for this year. Find the full tutorial at Preschool Alphabet.

3. Wreath of Gratitude

Make a wreath with your child like this one from Parents.com. Pick up some colored paper and a styrofoam wreath from the dollar store. Have your kids write down or draw what they are thankful for and pin their leaves to the wreath. You could even go on a nature hike and find real leaves to add to this project.

4. Thankful Dry Erase Boards

With this craft, let your child pick out a picture frame and frame a paper that says “Today I am thankful for…” with some space to write what they are thankful for. Each day have them write down with a dry erase marker what they are thankful for. Let them decorate the frame with pompoms, glitter, leaves, or whatever their little minds can imagine. You can find some free printables for this craft at Bren Did.

5. Thankful Pie

With this fun craft, all you need are some paper plates, a bracket, paint (or markers), and something to write with. Turn one of the plates into a pumpkin pie with the paint, cut out a “piece” of the pie, and write the words “I am thankful for…”. On the bottom plate, have your child write the things they are thankful for. Attach both plates with a bracket in the center so they can turn the plates to show what they are thankful for each day.

6. Grateful Rocks

Find some rocks on a hike, or pick some up from a craft store, and let your child paint, write, or draw what they are thankful for on them. This is a great activity for the entire family to participate in. For a fun activity afterwards, you can even let your kids hide the rocks around the house (inside or outside) and try to find each other’s rocks. Find the tutorial for these rocks at Teach Kids Art.

Halloween is known for the pillow cases full of candy the kids bring home and the parties that pump them full of sugar all month long. But it is possible to get kids excited about Halloween with healthy treats too! So, a group of dentists put together this list of healthy Halloween treats that your kids are sure to love.

Mini Pizza Pumpkins

Make personal pizzas with your kids. Let them decorate their own pizza like a jack-o-lantern with the toppings. The cheese makes for the perfect pumpkin color. Olives are the perfect topping for the eyes, nose, and mouth. But if your child doesn’t like olives, you can always use another topping.

Find the recipe at Play Party Plan.

Pretzel and Cheese Broomsticks

If your kids like string cheese, these are the perfect after school snack for any October day. And they are so simple and quick to put together. If you want to keep the kids busy, have them make the broomsticks themselves. They’re that easy!

“Boo”-Nana Pops

Make some frozen “Boo”-nana pops to get excited for Halloween. These spooky treats just take a banana, white chocolate (or vanilla yogurt for a healthier option), chocolate chips and popsicle sticks.

Silly Apple Bites

These fun apple bites look like little green monsters. And they make such a great healthy treat! Putting these treats together would be a fantastic activity for a kids’ Halloween party. Just give each kid a plate and their ingredients and let them go to town. They’ll have so much fun and enjoy a healthy snack in the process.

Find the recipe at Fork and Beans.

Carving pumpkins is fun, but can you eat them? Help your kids carve a face into a grapefruit and fill it up with their favorite fruit salad. Snacks are always more fun with faces.

Find the recipe at Say Yes.

Spider Sandwiches

Healthy “Candy Corn”

Mock up everyone’s favorite Halloween candy with similarly colored fruit with some whipped cream or yogurt on top. One piece of candy on top won’t hurt either. Use fun colors and similarities like this to encourage healthy eating.
