Maintaining a lush, green lawn can be a rewarding experience, but knowing when and why to start growing one can be challenging. This blog will look at common guidelines for beginners or experienced gardeners looking for help when starting or stopping their lawn growth efforts.

Timing Is Everything: When to Plant Your Lawn

Timing is everything when it comes to growing a lawn. The right time and date could make the difference between lush growth and patchiness. The optimal planting time depends on both your preferred grass variety and local climate conditions.

Cool-Season Grasses

Fall is the time for planting cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass or fescue in cooler climates. Cooler temperatures and abundant rainfall offer ideal conditions for seed germination and establishment. Trying this in late spring or summer would likely prove unsuccessful.

Warm-Season Grasses

When growing warm-season grasses like Bermuda or Zoysia in warmer regions, late spring to early summer should be your focus for your lawn-growing efforts. Like beachgoers soaking up sun rays at an outdoor picnic on July 4th, warm season grasses thrive under direct sunlight. Plant them at any other time than this and risk failure.

When Not to Grow a Lawn

What Happens To Grass During the Winter?

Timing doesn’t just depend on temperature and weather conditions. There are other factors that could scupper your lawn-growing efforts as well. Be mindful of these conditions when making the decision whether to sow seeds.

During Drought Conditions

It would be like asking a goldfish to run an Olympic marathon: not likely. Insufficient water supplies can hinder seed germination and stress young plants, often leading to failure. Patience should be practiced during times of drought. Wait for Mother Nature to provide relief in the form of rainfall before beginning your lawn-growing journey.

When Soil Quality is Poor

Growing a lawn on poor soil quality is destined to end in disappointment. If your soil is compacted or lacking key nutrients, take time before planting to improve it through soil testing, aeration, and adding compost or fertilizers. All these techniques could transform barren landscapes into lush gardens full of vibrant life.

Extreme Weather Conditions

Extreme weather conditions should also be taken into account when considering lawn care. Sweltering summer heat waves can scorch young grass seedlings, while planting during freezing winter temperatures is similarly fruitless. Your lawn would appreciate having more hospitable conditions in which its roots can flourish.

Pest and Weed Control

Best Weed Killer For Your Lawn: A Complete Guide

Maintaining a healthy yard requires keeping an eye out for weeds and lawn pests. Act quickly when dealing with weeds by either manually pulling them or applying appropriate herbicides. Monitoring for insects using eco-friendly insect control methods will prevent damage to your grass without harming beneficial organisms. Check regularly for common lawn fungi and diseases to address them promptly as well.

Conclusion

Achieving an impressive lawn requires patience and planning. Understanding when it is best to plant, depending on grass type and environmental conditions, is crucial in creating that lush emerald-green carpet of grass. Avoid planting during extreme weather conditions, periods of drought and when soil quality is inadequate. With proper patience and planning behind you, your lawn could soon become the envy of the neighborhood.

As spring arrives, it’s only natural to start dreaming of warmer days and long afternoons in the garden. Now is the perfect time to start getting your garden ready to spend more time in it. If you spend some weeks during spring getting your garden ready for summer, all you’ll need to do when summer arrives is sit back and relax.

It’s common knowledge that gardening is hard work so try and spread your tasks out rather than attempt them all at once. Here are a few jobs to put on the list.

Clean Your Tools

You can’t keep your garden trim and tidy without the use of your tools. If you want your tools to do a good job, they have to be well maintained. If they’ve been sitting in your shed covered in mud and grass all winter, you may have some work to do.

Wash your tools clean with water and brush off any stubborn dirt. When your tools are clean, oil them to prevent them from rusting. Try and remember to wash them clean after each use.

Kill Weeds

It’s common for weeds to show up as spring starts. You may begin to notice them more obviously as the weather gets warmer. They’re usually found in lawns and flower beds, and even in the cracks of patio stones.

It’s vital to use weed control to kill any weeds in your garden. Not only can they quickly take over and spread but they also steal essential nutrients from your lawn and plants.

Tidy Flower Beds

24 Genius Gardening Hacks You’ll Be Glad You Know

Along with the rest of your garden, your flower beds go through harsh winter weather like wind, rain, and snow. If you find debris in your flower beds, remove it and dispose of it. You may spot fallen, dead leaves or trash that has blown in from neighboring gardens.

Once you remove this debris, your flower bed has a better chance of getting sunlight, water, and nutrients to the root of your plants. You can also trim the edges of the beds to make it look neater.

Get Rid of Pests

Gardens are like havens for some pests but pests are always destroyers. From the smallest bugs to caterpillars, rats and everything in between- no-one wants to find pests in their garden. Fortunately there are ways you can deter pests from making a home in your garden.

The best way to do this is to make sure that your garden is clean and tidy. This eliminates the chance of pests finding food or places to hide. You can use pest repellants but these can harm your plants so using natural methods is favored. For instance, putting broken eggshells into your soil is a great way to keep slugs away. There are other methods to check out, so if you’re worried about any damage to your garden, consider looking into Mosquito Control to get your space back from aerial insects!

Trim Bushes and Trees

Here’s When to Prune Trees, Shrubs, and Flowers for Healthier Plants

Spring is the perfect time to trim back bushes and trees. It’s likely that they’ve overgrown throughout the winter and may be causing a hazardous obstacle in your garden. Similarly, overgrown trees can be a danger to life in strong winds or could cause damage to your property.

You can easily trim bushes yourself with the right tools. However, trees can be more complicated. You may need to contact a professional to cut down large branches if your tree is particularly tall.

Plant Summer Seeds and Bulbs

If you like to look out at an array of color in your garden when summer arrives, it’s time to start planting. There’s a wide variety of flowers that will be ready for summer if you start planting now. For instance, lilies, crocuses, and iris are all ideal for a colorful garden and work well in the same space together. If you have a raised bed to use, even better. Additionally, if you want a quick way to get a lush, green lawn this summer, consider installing sod. Choosing the best sod for your Florida property (or elsewhere) can help you avoid the long wait that comes with seeding. Sod establishes quickly and gives your yard an instant boost of greenery, letting you enjoy your outdoor space sooner.

Clean Your Patio

7 Expert Cleaning Tips for Spiffing Up Your Deck or Patio

Like the rest of your garden, your patio has likely taken a hit through the winter. It may look dirty and covered in debris. The good news is, patios are often easy to clean, especially if you have a jet wash to hand. Remove the debris and jet wash your patio to remove dirt and grime.

If you have any stubborn stains left, you can remove these with soapy water and a brush. Look over the stones to check for any cracks or holes. It’s important that these are fixed as soon as possible because they can weaken your patio flooring and invite weeds and pests to stay in your garden. Of course prevention is the best cure, so keep any of this from happening by investing in some Edmonton acrylic patio covers, so it stays clean from the get go.

Garden Sustainability

Your garden is a natural environment so it only makes sense to keep it as natural and as sustainable as possible. One of the ways you can do this is to start collecting rainwater. Your plants, flowers, and lawn will need to be watered during the summer but that doesn’t mean you have to do it with your hose pipe.

You can also think about starting to compost. Compost offers your plants rich nutrients and the best growing environment. It takes patience to create your own compost but it’s certainly worth it in the long run. Moving beyond soil and water management, planting native species is also a meaningful way to support a sustainable garden. Native plants are naturally adapted to your region’s climate and ecosystem, generally requiring less water and fewer chemical inputs, while providing vital support for local pollinators and wildlife. To assist with this, reputable providers such as Direct Native Plants typically offer a wide selection of native trees, shrubs, and perennials specifically suited to help you create a thriving, eco-friendly landscape.

Clean and Treat Garden Furniture

How We Keep Our Outdoor Furniture Clean

You’ll never use your garden furniture more than during the summer months. Whether you’re spending time alone in your garden or entertaining guests, your furniture must be in good condition. Start by cleaning your furniture with some soapy water to remove the dirt.

Once your furniture is cleaned, you should treat it. You can do this yourself or hire someone to do it for you. Treating your furniture will ensure it can stand the test of time by avoiding damage from the sun or spillages.

Invite The Right Wildlife

Although it’s important to keep pests away, the right kind of wildlife should be welcome in your garden. By planting wildflowers, you’ll encourage bees into your garden which is a must for the environment.

You can also use bird feeders and bird baths to welcome all different kinds of bird species to your garden. They’re fascinating to watch and beautiful to hear on a summer morning.

Winter can seem like forever. If you live in a place that has true winter, you probably know the feeling of just wanting the sun to come back for good and for spring to come.

After Christmas, it can feel like just a couple of grey, cold, months that lie ahead with not a lot to do and a lot of cabin fever.

But the good news is there are things you can do to make you feel productive even in the winter time and also help you prepare for spring, and help the winter months pass by a little quicker.

Here are five ways to get through the winter even if all you want is for it to be spring already, and be that much more excited for when it finally comes.

Make sleep a priority

A Good Night’s Rest: Can Music Help You Fall Asleep?

Since it is cold and grey and the sun goes down a lot earlier it may be time for you to also go down earlier and catch up on sleep that you have probably been needing.

The winter is a great time to get more sleep and get in the habit of having an earlier bedtime, which will not only make you feel more rested but also help prevent the chances of you getting sick, which can be an issue in winter.

Organize your home

5 Tips for Interior Design Business Success

The one upside to being stuck in your house all day because it’s freezing outside is that you can use that time to do some organizing.

You can go room to room and write down all the things you’ve been meaning to do and then each day you can mark those items off of your list.

Not only will it be nice to spend time in an organized home, but you can also involve the whole family because they are also stuck inside and can help the house get into tip-top shape before spring.

Clear your driveway

How to Stay Safe During the Icy Season

Clearing your driveway of snow and ice is a great way to be motivated to actually leave your house, but also ensures that you actually will be able to if you ever need to.

It may seem silly considering once you clear the snow only more will come, but making sure to do it on a regular basis will ensure that it stays relatively clear and doesn’t become overwhelming.

4 Super Fun Winter Date Ideas

Although this may be the very last thing you want to do during winter and before spring comes, getting outside will really help your mood and give you something to do.

Even if it’s just for a short walk or if you are feeling more adventurous and go skiing or snowboarding, getting outside will get you moving and active and make time pass a lot quicker.

Have a nice fire

Another simple thing that makes a big difference, in the wintertime, there is nothing like building a nice warm fire and sitting by the fireplace, reading a good book, or watching a good movie.

It will make winter time a lot more bearable and help pass the time before spring finally comes.

That feeling when Summer slips into Fall is one that most people drink in, and it inspires an anticipation of excitement and activity everyone relates to as well. This makes Fall the perfect time to re-evaluate some things, change others, and overall motivate yourself to hit your goals and obligations with a new energy.

If you, like me, have a tendency to get swept up in the changing seasons, you may be missing out on changes that can help you feel great as the months get colder. Check out these five ideas to see what you might benefit from this pumpkin season!

Your Look

The Biggest Street Style Trends of Fall 2018

Who doesn’t love getting a fresh new look? Seasonal changes inspire lots of people to cut and color their hair or update their wardrobe, and it definitely serves as a confidence booster when your kids are heading back to school and life just seems busier. And with new trends emerging each year with every season, it’s easy to find something new and fun to try.

Even simple changes like parting your hair on the other side of your head or investing in a warm jacket that will transition perfectly into winter weather will get you in the Fall spirit and ready to take on the challenges ahead.

Your Workout

How to Guarantee Your Workout is Always Working

If you like to get your sweat on at the gym, it’s easy to stick to the same workout you’ve been doing for the last six months, but the coming of a new season is the perfect excuse to make some alterations. New class schedules will start coming out, too, and it may be fun to add one or more of these into the rotation.

You should also think about how the change in weather will affect your preferred workouts and what you can substitute on those days. Does the road you love to run get icy early on? Transition to a new route or the treadmill. Will your regular gym hours be crowded now? Try a bodyweight workout at home or joining a Fall sports league.

Your Hygiene

The Definitive Guide to Dry Skin

As many women can attest, when the weather changes, it can make perfectly controlled skin suddenly dry up or breakout and hair brittle and dull. Anticipate how the Fall season will affect your skin and update your skincare routine accordingly.

You may switch out one product or all of them, but it’s worth it to keep your skin and hair looking beautiful. And if your last visit to the dentist was quite a while ago, replace your toothbrush so those pearly whites can keep impressing.

Your Food

Fall Weeknight Dinners

You’ve gotten into a great rotation when it comes to meal plans, but with the harvested fields come a slew of new delicious foods you don’t want to miss out on.

It’s time to take a quick hour and rehash your go-to recipes. You may choose to add squash to an already amazing meal or go full out with a different meal that compliments the new corn recipe you’ve found on Pinterest.

Your Schedule

12 Things Organized Moms Always Do Before School Starts Again

With the new season comes a change in commuter routines and the habits of the general population. Will your favorite coffee shop now be overrun with college students? Will it take 20 more minutes to drive by the elementary school along your normal drive to work?

Now is a good time to think about how you’ll need to adjust your own routine to avoid traffic buildup and busy crowds. But it’s also a good time to map out all your favorite seasonal activities so you can make the most of the corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and football games you love.

But don’t get weighed down by the stress of your current schedule; you can start looking at dates for your next vacation, too! Making your spring or summer plans now will help you and your best friends get through the never-ending winter months.

Green is the new black, right? Not only is going green and helping the environment a trending lifestyle these days, but it also really does make a difference! With all the pollution in the world today, in the air, in our oceans, in the ground, we need to make some serious changes in our lifestyle to create a better world for our posterity.

10 Ways to Be More Environmentally Friendly

To help us help you, our friends at BiologiQ, manufacturers of eco-friendly plastic resin pellets, have put together this list of tips for becoming more environmentally aware this fall.

Burning

Fall is the season for burning, whether it’s a bonfire, your wood stove, or burning your trash. Keep these two things in mind the next time you go to start that fire: only burn dry wood and never use burn barrels for trash or debris.

Never burn damp wood because it doesn’t burn completely and can release more pollutants in the air. These pollutants will settle around your home, or the site where you are burning, and have been known to cause asthma and other respiratory diseases. Burn wood that has been drying for at least 6 months to ensure that it is completely dry.

Don’t use burn barrels. They don’t burn efficiently and release a lot of smoke toxins, especially if you aren’t burning clean materials. Instead, try to recycle paper, plastic and glass materials; donate old clothing, and grind up old branches and leaves into a mulch or compost for your yard.

Always be aware of your state’s laws regarding burning and burn bans as well. These are set in place not only to prevent wildfires, but to help keep pollution down as well.

Donating Items

Does anyone use the fall as a time to clean out storage? Are you throwing out old toys, clothes, or other items you’ve replaced throughout the year?

Don’t just throw these items away. For one, they take up landfill space, and for two, valuable resources were used to produce those items, so by donating them to someone who needs them those resources are saved.

If you have clothing that your kids have grown out of, dishes you’ve replaced, old toys, find a place to donate them. Homeless shelters and rehabilitation centers are always looking for items to be donated. Search your community to see where that need lies and take in your donation.

If you have other items, like leftover building materials, paint, wood, pallets, nails, etc. there is a place to donate those things too. All it takes is a quick Google search to find where you can send the items that you want to get rid of. 5 ways to become more environmentally-friendly for your New Year’s resolution

Some ways you can easily conserve energy in your home are through home heating, hot water, and lights and appliances.

When heating your home, reduce the temperature of the thermostat one degree at a time until you reach a temperature you and your family can be comfortable with – wearing sweaters or blankets to stay cozy. At times when you are away from your home, set the thermostat even lower – about 55 or lower.

Keeping hot water use limited. Take shorter showers, wash your clothes in cold water, and install low-flow showerheads and faucets. You can also turn the temperature on your water heater down or try a solar water heater system.
