Bringing a child into the world is a beautiful and joyous occasion, but it can also come with its share of challenges and risks. Among these are birth injuries, which can have lifelong consequences for both the child and their family. Two common types of birth injuries are cerebral palsy and Erb’s palsy. These can often result in birth injury claims, and needless to say, can be heartbreaking for families.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect movement, posture, and muscle coordination. It is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture. While cerebral palsy is not a progressive condition (meaning it does not worsen over time), its symptoms can change and evolve as a child grows.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy

Prenatal Factors: Certain infections during pregnancy, such as rubella or cytomegalovirus, as well as maternal health conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders, can increase the risk of cerebral palsy.

Perinatal Factors: Oxygen deprivation during birth, premature birth, low birth weight, multiple births (twins, triplets), and complications during labor and delivery can contribute to the development of cerebral palsy.

Postnatal Factors: Infections, head injuries, and other brain injuries in infancy or early childhood can also lead to cerebral palsy.

Understanding Erb’s Palsy

Erb’s palsy, also known as brachial plexus birth palsy, is a condition that affects the nerves in the upper arm. It occurs when the brachial plexus, a network of nerves that controls movement and sensation in the arm and hand, is injured during childbirth.

Causes of Erb’s Palsy

Shoulder Dystocia: This occurs when a baby’s shoulder gets stuck behind the mother’s pubic bone during delivery, putting excessive pressure on the brachial plexus nerves.

Assisted Delivery: The improper use of forceps or vacuum extraction during delivery can also cause injury to the brachial plexus nerves, leading to Erb’s palsy.

Large Birth Weight: Babies with a higher birth weight are more likely to experience shoulder dystocia and subsequent brachial plexus injuries.

Recognizing the Symptoms

TIPS & TRICKS: CREATIVE LIFE HACKS FOR CEREBRAL PALSY

Cerebral Palsy Symptoms

Delayed Milestones: Difficulty reaching developmental milestones such as sitting up, crawling, or walking.

Muscle Spasticity: Stiff or tight muscles that may make movement difficult.

Involuntary Movements: Uncontrollable movements, such as tremors or jerking motions.

Poor Coordination: Difficulty with balance and coordination.

Erb’s Palsy Symptoms

Weakness or Paralysis: Partial or complete paralysis of the arm.

Loss of Sensation: Numbness or decreased sensation in the affected arm.

Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty moving the shoulder, arm, or hand.

Abnormal Muscle Development: Muscles in the affected arm may appear underdeveloped compared to the unaffected arm.

Treatment Options

Cerebral Palsy Treatment

Physical Therapy: Exercises and activities to improve muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination.

Medications: Medications to manage symptoms such as muscle spasticity or seizures.

Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct musculoskeletal issues or reduce spasticity.

Erb’s Palsy Treatment

Physical Therapy: Stretching exercises and range-of-motion exercises to improve flexibility and function in the affected arm.

Occupational Therapy: Activities to improve fine motor skills and help with activities of daily living.

Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be recommended to repair nerve damage or improve function in the affected arm.

Legal Considerations for Birth Injuries

When a child is born with a birth injury such as cerebral palsy or Erb’s palsy, families may wonder if medical negligence played a role. If medical negligence is suspected, it’s essential to consult with Birth injury attorneys who specializes in medical malpractice and birth injury cases.

Steps to Take:

Gather Medical Records: Obtain copies of all medical records related to the pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

Consult with Experts: Seek opinions from medical experts to determine if negligence occurred and if it contributed to the birth injury.

Understand Legal Rights: A solicitor can help families understand their legal rights and options for seeking compensation for medical expenses, ongoing care, and other damages.

Conclusion

Cerebral palsy and Erb’s palsy are complex conditions that have profound effects on children and their families. Understanding their causes, symptoms, and treatment options is crucial for providing the best possible care and support. Additionally, in cases where medical negligence may have played a role, seeking guidance from a knowledgeable solicitor is essential to navigate the legal process and pursue accountability and compensation. By promoting awareness and advocating for improved maternal and neonatal care, we can work towards reducing the incidence of birth injuries and promoting better health outcomes for all children.

BV, short for bacterial vaginosis, is a common condition affecting nearly 30% of women that occurs due to changes in bacteria levels in the vagina. Any woman can suffer from the disorder but certain factors can increase the risk.

Fortunately, bacterial vaginosis is treatable, so visit your doctor or nurse immediately if you notice any symptoms. If left untreated, the condition may result in complications like:

1. Higher chances of contracting STIs

Dr Anita Mitra, AKA The Gynae Geek, Wants You to Have a Healthy Vagina

Untreated BV increases the risk of catching STIs like herpes or chlamydia. This is due to changes in mucin-degrading enzymes and vaginal pH.

Mucin-degrading enzymes affect cervical mucus, which provides a barrier to target cells and traps pathogens that lead to vulnerability. The risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections increases with the severity of the BV.

2. Decrease in fertility

Untreated bacterial vaginosis decreases fertility by creating a toxic environment that doesn’t support reproduction, increasing inflammation, and compromising the immune system.

Furthermore, the numerous changes from the infection affect the survival of the sperm and vaginal cells.

3. Risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease

BV alters the vaginal flora and is thus associated with pelvic inflammatory disease. This is an infection of the reproductive system and may result in ectopic pregnancy or severe reproductive morbidity.

4. Pregnancy complications

23 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Bacterial vaginosis can affect any woman, and pregnant women are no exception. Sadly, the infection is even more serious in expectant mothers, leading to pregnancy complications, including early delivery or low birth weight. In addition, it may lead to other serious infections after delivery.

Unfortunately, expectant mothers are more prone to the infection due to alterations in hormones that occur during pregnancy. That’s why the condition should not be left untreated to avoid further complications.

5. Infections after surgery

12 Everyday Things You Can Do For a Happier Vagina

Untreated bacterial vaginosis may lead to infections after surgeries like hysterectomies, cesarean deliveries, and abortions. Most of these infections affect the female reproductive system.

6. High chances of getting HIV

Generally, bacterial vaginosis interferes with the protective microorganisms in the vagina. As a result, a BV patient is more vulnerable to contracting HIV from an infected person. Besides, the condition increases pH levels which supports the survival of the HIV virus.

Again, since the condition interferes with the protective mucus barrier, BV patients are more likely to contract HIV from infected persons compared to BV-free females. The condition impacts your reproductive system and should be treated immediately to avoid further complications.

Bacterial vaginosis treatment options

BV patients should be treated to relieve symptoms and avoid further complications. Some possible medical treatment options include:

Tinidazole which is taken orally

Clindamycin ovules which are inserted vaginally

Clindamycin taken orally or a cream inserted vaginally.

Metronidazole gel for vaginal insertion or metronidazole taken by mouth.

Most vaginal insert medications are done at night as you go to sleep so your body gets enough time for the treatment.

Complementary therapies include:

Patients using tinidazole or metronidazole should use condoms or refrain from intercourse. They should also avoid alcohol when taking and after the completion of the treatment.

It’s not surprising for the condition to persist or recur. Your doctor might prescribe more drugs or an extended course of antibiotics for effective treatment. Adhere to the treatment faithfully and always check with your doctor in case of any new symptoms.

The advantages of using the treatment mentioned above include treating the infection thoroughly as long as you closely follow the doctor’s instructions. Besides, you avoid further complications that result from untreated bacterial vaginosis.

In addition, expectant mothers avoid pregnancy complications like low-birth-weight babies or early delivery. And in the case of cesarean delivery, there won’t be higher risks of contracting infection, and you get to avoid reduced fertility.

Final thought

Untreated bacterial vaginosis may result in serious complications. Luckily, the condition is easily treated so long as you stick to the treatment plan and check with your doctor in case of severe symptoms.

Everyone has heard horror stories from people getting their wisdom teeth removed. While the awful things that happen are typically few and far between, those stories are what come to mind the moment the dentist tells you that it’s time to get your wisdom teeth removed.
Plan on taking time off of work or school after you have your wisdom teeth out. You’ll need time to recover, and rest helps to speed up the recovery process. Also, keep in mind that getting your teeth pulled can be a painful experience and you’ll probably need some heavy pain killers to get you through the first part of the recovery process. If you have kids at home you might want to set up childcare services so you have time for the rest you need.

Don’t drive yourself home. Even if you choose to stay awake for your extraction you will still be a little loopy, either from pain or drugs. Plan on having a friend or neighbor give you a ride home.

According to WebMD, there are three options of anesthesia for the actual surgery.

Local: Your doctor will numb your mouth and then you’ll be given some sort of gas (nitrous oxide or laughing gas) to help you relax during the surgery.

IV sedation:The surgeon will numb your mouth and you’ll be given drugs through an IV to make you drowsy. There’s a good chance you’ll sleep through the entire extraction.

General: You’ll be given drugs to put you to sleep and you’ll be out for the entire procedure. Typically you wake up about an hour or so later.

Most likely you’ll have quite a bit of swelling so you’ll want to use an icepack to help keep that to a minimum.

It typically takes around 3 days for swelling to go down and then it will take a few more weeks for you to completely heal.

Take the medicine your doctor prescribes to help with pain and swelling management.

If you’re a little loopy on your pain meds you might want a friend or family member to hold onto your phone for safekeeping so you don’t do anything you’ll regret later.
