Countless people around the world struggle with insecurity, but very few are willing to speak about it. Due to the silence surrounding this topic, it can be easy to get lost in a sea of self-doubt and low confidence. Even worse, it’s possible to think you’re the only one experiencing this!

The truth is that insecurity is a normal part of life, and there are plenty of ways you can free yourself from the hold it has over you. However, there’s no one way to tackle this problem: moving past insecurity involves a holistic approach to your entire life. If this sounds daunting, don’t worry: it’s not as hard as it seems.

Identify The Root of the Problem

When you’re experiencing insecurity, it can be really hard to have a clear picture of the world around you. These feelings can cloud your judgment, perception, and self-image. That’s why it’s vital to find a way to take a step back, and find an objective view over your situation. Something, somewhere in your life, is causing you distress. Your job now is to pinpoint it.

According to Psychology Today, there are three primary causes of insecurity.

Insecurity stemming from failure or rejection

Insecurity caused by social anxiety

Insecurity fueled by perfectionism

Take stock of your life in an objective way, and ask yourself whether any of these three causes resonate with you. The fact is that there are tried-and-true methods for handling each one, so take comfort in the fact that insecurity isn’t a life sentence! There are ways to move past it by targeting the roots.

While this approach is the most direct, there are other factors in your life that can make the problem far worse. Addressing them is central to a holistic approach towards tackling your insecurity. Let’s take a look at where you can begin.

Take a Look At Your Routine

Exercise, sleeping enough, eating healthy and drinking in moderation are all things that contribute towards reducing your insecurity. While it may not seem like your self-critical feelings are related to how much you slept last night, the truth is that the condition of our body dictates a lot of our emotional state.

Simple habits for better mental health like these go a long way towards tackling anxiety. This involves a broad effort across many different elements of your life, but the fact is that this is key to tackling anxiety: a multi-front approach. You won’t get anywhere by changing only one thing. You have to take an active approach towards improving the quality of every part of your life.

Unfortunately, if you’re not careful, bad habits accumulate and solidify. Once they do, it’s much harder to undo them. For example, exercising to prevent weight gain is far easier than exercising to achieve weight loss. Be proactive, get healthy, and kick those bad habits to the curb. You’ll find that your confidence and self-image will have improved considerably!

Pinpoint Negative People in Your Life

We all know people who are seriously and unendingly negative. Often, they can’t help it! It’s as if complaining, criticizing, and groaning is built into their DNA. Their ability to turn any mundane event into a reason for fear and regret is almost impressive. There’s no two ways around it: avoid these people.

Insecurity includes, in part, a defeatist outlook on the world. When you’re surrounded by people who constantly preach that life is terrible, and that nothing is worth doing, it can go to your head and make your struggle with insecurity a lot more severe. This is doubly true for those who can’t help but criticize you constantly – the serious effect of this behavior on your mental health is not something you should take lightly.

However, what if you can’t walk away? Often those who drag you down the most are your very own family members, or a particularly cruel boss at your workplace. In these cases, you may simply have to confront them. For example, according to Lensa if your boss makes you feel incompetent, it’s important to stand up to him or her in a professional manner, even if it jeapordizes your employment!

This is because putting your foot down about your boundaries and your mental health is vital. If standing up for yourself in a professional way means you may lose your job, then you’re probably better off finding a different place to work. When it comes to those who drag you down intentionally or unintentionally, they can’t be higher on your list of priorities than your own mental health.

Take Care of Your Body

6 Things You Can Do to Improve Your Health

While the real work that goes into tackling insecurity happens through changes to your mindset, habits, and environment, it’s important to find a way to embrace your physical beauty as well! Putting effort into the way you present yourself to the world is a great way to improve your self-esteem.

Check out our article on 5 tips for a more confident you. Using some of these tricks, you can remind yourself that you are, in fact, beautiful! Simply feeling your beauty can help wash away insecurity, and strengthen the core self-image that gives you confidence.

Find Perspective

At the end of the day, remind yourself that insecurity is a normal part of life. Everybody experiences it, and often it’s simply a sign that there’s something in our inner selves or the world around us that we’d like to change. Instead of feeling resentful towards this negative emotion, think of it as a warning system that’s on your side.

Insecurity is simply your brain trying to tell you that something doesn’t feel right. As soon as you feel it, look around at your life, and determine the problem. Once you do, it’s far easier to take steps towards fixing it. Insecurity isn’t something you need to fight, instead it’s a sign that there’s a battle to be fought elsewhere.

January isn’t over yet so as far as resolutions go, there’s still time to formulate yours!

I’m not sure how many of you reading this, like me, have often thought about whether to even make resolutions at all. We make resolutions, sometimes grand ones – losing weight, going vegan, pursuing a different hobby or learning a new skill, getting a passport, travelling the world (you get the drift) – only to break them or worse still not even give them a go before giving up all together. And that’s ok.

This year, I told myself, I’d take my time formulating resolutions. Instead of a time bound, tangible resolution (like the ones mentioned above), I’d concentrate on improving my mindset, daily – as means to an end – which will assist me in achieving those time bound, tangible, resolutions. Here are some of my practical New Year 2020 Daily Resolutions:

Patience & Perseverance

The Unconventional Ways You Can Relax The Mind And The Body

In this generation of instant gratification, having patience is a rare commodity. As a mother, wife & professional I get impatient & frustrated easily & on a daily basis when things don’t go my way or when tasks are not completed in the time, I consider appropriate. My anxiety doesn’t help either. So, I’ve decided to be more patient with myself for starters. I’ve decided to do my best, be less judgmental of people & situations and persevere.

Obedience, Without Question or Grumbling

5 Resolutions You Can Actually Keep In The New Year

Someone asks you to do something that you know sounds like a good idea. But you don’t think too hard about it, you don’t obsess over what could potentially go wrong or how you’d look doing it. You just say ‘Yes’ (with a smile). Oh! How liberating to not worry for once & just go with the flow. For me, it’s so far helped saved time, precious time I am no using to focus on creativity & execution.

Generosity of Time, Words & Actions

A Healthy Office Environment

Easy to understand, difficult to execute. Being generous with my deeds & an attitude of service to others has always come naturally to me. It’s the generosity of my words & time that I have a tough time with. I’m naturally feisty & sarcastic. And as for time, it’s the one thing none of us have control over, so I am very stingy with mine. But though we can never control – shorten or lengthen – real time, we can also choose how & who to spend time with it and therein lies the generosity. I’ve been more generous with my time lately & it’s brough blessings on my family, friends & me!

Avoiding Acedia

Mood, Anxiety, and Design

Acedia, often linked to sloth and the 7 Deadly Sins is “a state of (mental) restlessness and inability either to work or to pray”. Whereas Sloth is physical laziness, Acedia is more of a metal indifference, intrusive thinking & purposefully distracting yourself with other thoughts or actions, to avoid dealing with a priority. Controlling the mind is harder than controller the body. I’ve been guilty of this several times, knowingly or unknowingly, throughout the day. But now that I know what Acedia is, I’m more aware & guarded in my thoughts. It’s given me more clarity to prioritize my tasks throughout the day & directly helped me complete the right kind of work in the right time.

Withdraw from Social Media

Self-Motivation: How To Ensure Productivity While You Work From Home

I cringe at this one as I’m sure most of us do. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube & the rest have taken over our lives! Wrong. We’ve let them. Locking up phones, temporarily deactivating Social media accounts & taking technology detox breaks are good ways to break the habit. Recently however, someone suggested another solution & probably the best one I’ve heard so far. Every time I think of reaching for my phone, I look at the person next to me instead & engage with that person, instead of a lifeless phone!

An Attitude of Gratitude

The Neuroscience of Gratitude and How It Affects Anxiety & Grief

Toughie! Many scientific studies have show than being more grateful has a physical impact on a person’s brain and is directly linked to increased calm and a sense of happiness. That said most of us are ungrateful throughout the day, when we complain about our jobs, problems with co-workers, the never-ending chores at home, even simple things like not enjoying our meals, or the way we spend our relaxation time. Complaining & being dissatisfied are symptoms of an ungrateful attitude. But everyday is a new day and an opportunity for me to be more grateful!

Open-Mindedness

How Great Leaders Align Their Company With Their Vision

Simply put, this involves being receptive to a wide variety of ideas, arguments, and information. For me being open minded means, giving up the impulse to react immediately and instead listen & assess a person or situation. It was hard at first, because my natural habit to interject kicked in. But I realized open-mindedness is a necessary ability in order to think critically and rationally. It’s a habit that needs to be cultivated and we’re never too old to develop good habits

Daily examination of Conscience

4 Ways To Practice Self-Care Today

This practice is common as a spiritual exercise among Christians and Catholics and involves a ‘review of one’s past thoughts, words, actions, and omissions for the purpose of ascertaining their conformity with, or deviation from, the moral law’. I don’t see why this practice cannot be applied to our secular, everyday lives. It would be similar to a year end job review – what are the things we did well, how can we improve on our weaknesses and what would the outcome look like? I believe a daily examination of conscience will eventually make me a better version of myself. This doesn’t only have to be for adults, so I’ve also begun to help my kids adopt this positive practice.

If you enjoyed reading this or agree that some of these are areas of concern for you that could use a bit of improvement, feel free to adopt some or all of my New Year 2020 Daily Resolutions for yourself. Remember to be kind to yourself. I for one, am rooting for you. Good Luck!

The human body is an incredible mechanism. It heals itself, sustains life, and can do so many different things that most people aren’t even aware of. All we have to do is provide the right fuel and give it the proper care.

But sometimes, we take advantage of our body and don’t treat it with the right care, whether that’s rest, a session with a Massage Therapist Near Me, or a combination of a few different things. We keep pushing it to carry out tasks for us without checking in to see how it’s doing. There are a few specific body parts that we use daily and need to pay a little more attention to the signs that they give.

Feet

5 Important Things Your Feet Are Trying to Tell You about Your Body

How often do you use your feet? Even if you aren’t a marathon runner, your feet still do a lot of work for you. Carrying you to and from work, around your house, to walk the dog, to chauffeur kids around, you get the picture. So, how much do you really pay them any attention?

Foot care is so incredibly important if you want to keep doing these daily tasks. So, here are some things that you can do to care for you feet:

Wash and dry them. (Drying them is especially important for preventing fungal growth.)

Massage them.

Pay attention to aches and pains, and take a break.

Wear comfortable, non-restrictive footwear.

Trim your toenails.

Let your feet breathe. Take your shoes and socks off for a little time every day.

If there are any abnormalities like lasting blemishes, aching joints, or other problems with your feet, go see a podiatrist.

Hands

4 Health Tips for the 9-5 Employee

We probably do as much or more with our hands than we do with our feet. Whether you do manual labor, type on a computer all day, take care of children, etc., your hands are the ones doing a lot of the work. So, what do you do to care for your hands?

Here are some things you can do to make sure your hands get the attention they need:

Wash your hands. This is for your hands, but also for the benefit of your entire body and keeping germs away.

Protect your hands. Use the right kind of gloves when doing yard work or exercising.

Massage them and moisturize them.

Pay attention to aches and pains, and again, take a break.

Trim your fingernails regularly.

Back

7 Ways to Pamper Yourself This Holiday Season

Your back is part of your core, without that, you aren’t going to be able to do much. So, here’s that question again – what are you doing to care for your back?

Back pain and problems with the back can be debilitating and can keep you from doing the things that you enjoy or even the basic tasks you need to accomplish each day.

Here are some ways you can give your back a little extra care:

Get a massage. (Seeing common theme here?)

Take a bath.

Avoid lifting heavy things (or know your limits at least).

Use correct posture when exercising.

Pay attention to aches and pains, and take a break.

Get a good bed and pillow.

Stretch daily.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Do what you can to give your body the extra care that it needs. After all, it does so much for you, so make sure you take a little time to give back.

Most of us don’t really give a lot of attention to our feet, although they are a pretty important part of your body if you actually sit and think about it.

They are how you get around, how your body is able to get from point A to point B. They are how you walk, run, glide, dance, and basically how you do all physical activities.

But even though they are so essential to most of our daily activities, most of the time we hardly pay attention to them.

This is something that most of us should probably change, because paying attention to your feet might actually help you to know a little more about your body and your overall health.

Here are seven things your feet are trying to tell you about your health, and if you actually pay attention it can help to identify some health issues you might have, or help prevent them in general.

Pain in the morning is probably not normal

If you’ve ever noticed that when you wake up and try to take a few steps and it’s painful, it might be a sign that something is off.

According to the Center for Diseases Control, pain in your feet when you first try to walk in the morning could be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis, because this can cause inflammation of the joints which leads to pain. The only way to stop this pain is to talk to your foot doctor, who can probably prescribe medication and certain exercises to help alleviate the pain.

Pay attention to cold feet

So THAT’s why women’s feet and hands are always cold! Why they are slaves to their hormones

For most of us having cold feet on cold days or when walking across wood or tile in the mornings is completely normal. If your feet continuously feel cold, however, there may be something else your feet are trying to tell you.

One of the first things cold feet could be a sign of is poor circulation, which is common if you are too sedentary. Making sure to actually use your feet and walk around, exercise, and lead a more active lifestyle could help with this issue.

Cold feet can also be a sign of a more serious health issue, one as serious as diabetes. According to the CDC, cold or numb feet could be a sign of diabetes and nerve damage associated with diabetes, so if you notice any of these signs it’s best to call your local foot doctor.

The color of your nails matter

8 Things Your Nails Are Trying To Tell You

While some may have pretty toenails due to a pedicure, what’s important is to pay attention to is the color of your nails without nail polish on.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, a healthy toenail should have the actual nail growing right against the toe and the toenail should look pink and not sunken in.

If you have nails that have a yellow color to them, look sunken in or the nail isn’t growing correctly it could be a sign of a fungal infection. Other deformities in the nails could also mean anemia, poor circulation, or even a skin condition.
